Numerical and Experimental Methods for Estimating the Propagation Loss in Microphotonic Waveguides

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
Finite‐element finite‐difference time domain, eigenmode‐expansion, and volume‐current simulations are benchmarked against cut‐back, ring‐resonator, and OFDR measurements to quantify waveguide propagation loss in integrated photonic circuits. Scattering, absorption, leakage, and back‐reflection contributions are dissected; error sources are ranked; and ...

Sparsity-Based Kalman Filters for Data Assimilation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Several variations of the Kalman filter algorithm, such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF), are widely used in science and engineering applications.

Assimilation of Lagrangian data in oceanography [PDF]

open access: yesPAMM, 2007
AbstractWithin the framework of Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE), an increasing amount of data are available. A crucial issue for oceanographers is to exploit at best these observations, in order to improve models, climatology, forecasts, etc.

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers in Soft Robotics: Assessing Promise and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are programmable soft materials that undergo large, anisotropic deformation in response to external stimuli. Their molecular alignment encodes directional actuation in a monolithic structure, making them long‐standing candidates for soft robotic systems.

Forecast of Spectral Features by Ensemble Data Assimilation

open access: yesFrontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, 2018
Data assimilation permits to compute optimal forecasts in high-dimensional systems as, e.g., in weather forecasting. Typically such forecasts are spatially distributed time series of system variables. We hypothesize that such forecasts are not optimal if

Development of a data assimilation algorithm

open access: yesComputers & Mathematics with Applications, 2008
AbstractIt is important to incorporate all available observations when large-scale mathematical models arising in different fields of science and engineering are used to study various physical and chemical processes. Variational data assimilation techniques can be used in the attempts to utilize efficiently observations in a large-scale model (for ...

Corn Zein Nanocarriers for Agrochemical Delivery and Smart Packaging

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This review explores zein, a corn‐derived biodegradable protein, as a multifunctional nanocarrier for sustainable agriculture and packaging. It examines advances in agrochemical delivery, smart packaging, and stimuli‐responsive systems, while addressing scalability, environmental fate, and regulatory barriers.

Tropopause sharpening by data assimilation [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
AbstractData assimilation was recently suggested to smooth out the sharp gradients that characterize the tropopause inversion layer (TIL) in systems that did not assimilate TIL‐resolving observations. We investigate whether this effect is present in the ERA‐Interim reanalysis and the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF ...

Movement Mechanisms Harness Lévy Flight for Energy‐Efficient Wastewater Treatment in Microalgae–Bacteria Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Here, our novel model that integrates metabolism with motility dynamics reveals that microalgae shift bacterial movement toward Lévy flight patterns, enhancing encounter rates and self‐aggregation. This microecological manipulation reduces energy costs, strengthens functions such as pollutant removal and system stability.
