Impact Evaluation of Assimilating Surface Sensitive Infrared Radiance Observations over Land and Sea Ice from Observing System Simulation Experiments

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2015
In this study, Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) are conducted to analyze the impact of assimilating surface sensitive infrared radiance observations over land and sea ice. This type of assimilation has not yet been successfully implemented

On sequential multiscale inversion and data assimilation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Multiscale approaches are very popular for example for solving partial differential equations and in many applied fields dealing with phenomena which take place on different levels of detail.

The Assimilation of Envisat data (ASSET) project [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2006
Abstract. This paper discusses the highlights of the EU-funded "Assimilation of Envisat data" (ASSET) project, which has involved assimilation of Envisat atmospheric constituent and temperature data into systems based on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and chemical transport models (CTMs).

Bias Characteristics of COSMIC RO Data within Clouds Based on Different Background Fields

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang, 2023
The Global Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) radio occultation (RO) from 2007 to 2009 were collocated with the CloudSat nadir-pointing cloud profiling radar (CPR) in time and space in this study. We ...

Fundamentals of Data Assimilation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Abstract. This article lays out the fundamentals of data assimilation as used in biogeochemistry. It demonstrates that all of the methods in widespread use within the field are special cases of the underlying Bayesian formalism. Methods differ in the assumptions they make and information they provide on the probability distributions used in Bayesian ...

Data assimilation for plume models [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2005
Abstract. We use a four-dimensional variational data assimilation (4D-VAR) algorithm to observe the growth of 2-D plumes from a point heat source. In order to test the predictability of the 4D-VAR technique for 2-D plumes, we perturb the initial conditions and compare the resulting predictions to the predictions given by a direct numerical simulation ...

Accessible ecophysiological tools for seabird conservation

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 32, Issue 12, Page 1983-2002, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Seabirds are the most endangered avian taxa on Earth, with over a third of species globally threatened. To help slow their decline, conservation physiology seeks to determine how seabird responses to climatic and anthropogenic threats influence demographic processes, but it is not widely utilized in monitoring.

Conditions for successful data assimilation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2013
We show, using idealized models, that numerical data assimilation can be successful only if an effective dimension of the problem is not excessive. This effective dimension depends on the noise in the model and the data, and in physically reasonable problems, it can be moderate even when the number of variables is huge.
