Hydrologic Data Assimilation [PDF]
Information about hydrologic conditions is of critical importance to real-world applications such as agricultural production, water resource management, flood prediction, water supply, weather and climate forecasting, and environmental preservation. Improved hydrologic condition estimates are useful for agriculture, ecology, civil engineering, water ...

Seasonal forecasting of subsurface marine heatwaves
Marine heatwaves damage marine ecosystems and services, with effects identified mostly below the ocean surface. To create a truly user-relevant detection system, it is necessary to provide subsurface forecasts.

Fundamentals of Data Assimilation [PDF]
Abstract. This article lays out the fundamentals of data assimilation as used in biogeochemistry. It demonstrates that all of the methods in widespread use within the field are special cases of the underlying Bayesian formalism. Methods differ in the assumptions they make and information they provide on the probability distributions used in Bayesian ...

Conditions for successful data assimilation [PDF]
We show, using idealized models, that numerical data assimilation can be successful only if an effective dimension of the problem is not excessive. This effective dimension depends on the noise in the model and the data, and in physically reasonable problems, it can be moderate even when the number of variables is huge.

Super-resolution data assimilation
AbstractIncreasing model resolution can improve the performance of a data assimilation system because it reduces model error, the system can more optimally use high-resolution observations, and with an ensemble data assimilation method the forecast error covariances are improved.

Data assimilation in a multi-scale model [PDF]
Data assimilation for multi-scale models is an important contemporary research topic. Especially the role of unresolved scales and model error in data assimilation needs to be systematically addressed.

The Onsager--Machlup functional for data assimilation [PDF]
When taking the model error into account in data assimilation, one needs to evaluate the prior distribution represented by the Onsager--Machlup functional.

Variational Data Assimilation via Sparse Regularization [PDF]
This paper studies the role of sparse regularization in a properly chosen basis for variational data assimilation (VDA) problems. Specifically, it focuses on data assimilation of noisy and down-sampled observations while the state variable of interest ...
