Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Data-Interpretation Methodologies for Non-Linear Earthquake Response Predictions of Damaged Structures

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2017
Seismic exposure of buildings presents difficult engineering challenges. The principles of seismic design involve structures that sustain damage and still protect inhabitants.

The interpretation of complementation data

open access: yesGenetical Research, 1966
The evidence for complementation maps being linear is examined by analysis of all known complementation maps in micro-organisms, and by constructing maps from mutants randomly sampled from amongst those at theleu-2locus inNeurosporawith known complementing properties.

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

Teaching Real Data Interpretation with Models (TRIM): Analysis of Student Dialogue in a Large-Enrollment Cell and Developmental Biology Course

open access: yesCBE - Life Sciences Education, 2016
Data interpretation is an important skill that should be developed within undergraduate biology courses. The authors present instruction in which students collaborate to understand authentic data using biological models.

Verifying Accuracy of Data Registration in Households\' Files Living in Rural Areas of Hamadan County in 2011

open access: yesپزشکی بالینی ابن سینا, 2013
Introduction & Objective: Initial information is necessary for decision and policy making. A weak information system leads to poor decision-making but the accuracy of data registration and collection can be a valid supporter for assessing health system ...

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...

On the Genetic Interpretation of Disease Data

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
The understanding of host genetic variation in disease resistance increasingly requires the use of field data to obtain sufficient numbers of phenotypes. We introduce concepts necessary for a genetic interpretation of field disease data, for diseases caused by microparasites such as bacteria or viruses. Our focus is on variance component estimation and

Interpretation of altimeter data [PDF]

open access: yes
Two methods are used to interpret the whole range of signals contained in the Geos 3 altimeter data. They each address a different class of events and thus complement each other in their ability to provide information on the state of convection in the ...
