Cell‐free and extracellular vesicle microRNAs with clinical utility for solid tumors
Cell‐free microRNAs (cfmiRs) are small‐RNA circulating molecules detectable in almost all body biofluids. Innovative technologies have improved the application of cfmiRs to oncology, with a focus on clinical needs for different solid tumors, but with emphasis on diagnosis, prognosis, cancer recurrence, as well as treatment monitoring.

Common pitfalls in statistical analysis: The perils of multiple testing
Multiple testing refers to situations where a dataset is subjected to statistical testing multiple times - either at multiple time-points or through multiple subgroups or for multiple end-points. This amplifies the probability of a false-positive finding.

This study demonstrates that KRAS and GNAS mutations are more prevalent in patients with resected intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) compared to those under clinical surveillance. GNAS mutations significantly differ between the two patient cohorts, indicating that their absence may serve as a potential biomarker to support conservative ...

Geophysical interpretation of Venus gravity data [PDF]
The investigation of the subsurface mass distribution of Venus through the analysis of the data from Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) is presented. The Doppler tracking data was used to map the gravitational potential, which was compared to the topographic ...

Spectral plots and the representation and interpretation of biological data
It is basic question in biology and other fields to identify the char- acteristic properties that on one hand are shared by structures from a particular realm, like gene regulation, protein-protein interaction or neu- ral networks or foodwebs, and that ...

We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

Tumor microenvironment drives cancer formation and progression. We analyzed the role of human cancer‐associated adipocytes from patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) stratified as lean, overweight, or obese. RNA‐seq demonstrated that, among the most altered genes involved in the tumor–stroma crosstalk, are ADAM12 and CYP1B1, which were proven to be ...

Interpretable Deep Convolutional Neural Networks via Meta-learning [PDF]
Model interpretability is a requirement in many applications in which crucial decisions are made by users relying on a model's outputs. The recent movement for "algorithmic fairness" also stipulates explainability, and therefore interpretability of learning models.

Actionable Interpretation of Machine Learning Models for Sequential Data: Dementia-related Agitation Use Case [PDF]
Machine learning has shown successes for complex learning problems in which data/parameters can be multidimensional and too complex for a first-principles based analysis. Some applications that utilize machine learning require human interpretability, not just to understand a particular result (classification, detection, etc.) but also for humans to ...
