Biasing, Debiasing, and the Law
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2013In this chapter, we build on the existing literature on the use of legal strategies for addressing problems of biased judgment and behavior, exploring how heuristics and biases may be exploited to foster efficiency in the presence of other incentive alignment problems.

Debiasing of SRAM PUFs: Selection and Balancing
2019 IEEE International Workshop on Information Forensics and Security (WIFS), 2019Fuzzy commitment is used to bind a secret key to an SRAM-PUF observation vector. The fuzzy commitment scheme is secure as long as the observation vector has full entropy. Here, we assume that the observation vectors are biased, and explore two elementary schemes for debiasing: Selection and balancing.

Coefficients for Debiasing Forecasts
Monthly Weather Review, 1991Abstract Skill-score decompositions can be used to analyze the effects of bias on forecasting skill. However, since bias terms are typically squared, and bias is measured in skill-score units rather than in units of the forecasts, such decompositions only partially describe the nature of the bias.

Common Law World Review, 2017
Behavioral economics has revolutionized American legal scholarship in many areas of law, but not in administrative law, the law that regulates the regulators. This article theorizes that the administrative law doctrines developed by the Supreme Court of the United States strikingly resemble a system of ‘debiasing’ devices developed to counteract ...

Correlation adjusted debiased Lasso: debiasing the Lasso with inaccurate covariate model
Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical MethodologyAbstract We consider the problem of estimating a low-dimensional parameter in high-dimensional linear regression. Constructing an approximately unbiased estimate of the parameter of interest is a crucial step towards performing statistical inference.

Knowledge Representation for Debiasing
2021Bias in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is a top concern for developers and users of intelligent technology. Intelligent systems can, in theory, be designed to identify and resolve algorithmic bias, but for this to be possible it is necessary to have an adequate knowledge representation of bias itself, which has never been fully achieved ...

How to Institutionalize Debiasing
2019The first thing I learned as a consultant is that it is easy to have good ideas—the real challenge is in implementing them! Having read 22 chapters of this book already, your head hopefully is brimming with good ideas on how to fight algorithmic bias. But how do you make it happen, especially if you, say, oversee a couple of hundred data scientists who
