Declarative semantics of interoperable data- and knowledge-bases
[1993] Proceedings International Conference on Intelligent and Cooperative Information Systems, 2002We show how the declarative semantics of intelligent and cooperative information systems can be-developed in an institutional framework. The presentation of the semantics is tailored to Epsilon, a management system for distributed knowledge bases whose modules may employ different logical systems, and that allows deductions to be performed ...

Declarations of Independents: On Local Knowledge and Localist Knowledge
Anthropological Quarterly, 2010Localist movements support increased local ownership of regional economies and oppose the colonization of local economies by corporate firms, franchises, and agribusiness. Events organized by a "buy local" and "anti-big-box" organization in upstate New York provide the point of departure for an exploration of the meanings of the terms "local" and ...

The basic building blocks for language use and development are words and lexical phrases. Operating in our native language, we draw on an immense store of lexical items and have in-depth knowledge of the meaning and usage restrictions of many words and lexical expressions.

Order dependence of declarative knowledge representation
2005It has been a widely accepted assumption among knowledge representation researchers that declarative knowledge representation is in some sense order independent. In this paper we will argue that there are a number of different possible senses of the term “order independent” and that one needs at least one type of order dependence to develop a ...

On the acquisition of new declarative knowledge in amnesia.
Behavioral Neuroscience, 1995In 2 experiments, the acquisition of new declarative knowledge was examined in amnesic patients and in 7 groups of controls, with a study-only procedure that delayed testing until the conclusion of training. The study-only procedure was compared with a standard procedure in which study and test trials alternated (study-test).

Declarative Update Policies for Nonmonotonic Knowledge Bases
2004Updating databases, and in particular relational databases, is a central issue that has been well studied in the database field for many years, and solutions have been incorporated into commercial database systems. As for more advanced databases such as logical databases and in particular, for nonmonotonic knowledge bases, work on this problem is more ...

A Declarative Similarity Framework for Knowledge Intensive CBR
2001This paper focuses on the design of knowledge intensive CBR systems and introduces a domain-independent architecture to help it. Our approach is based on acquiring the domain knowledge by reusing knowledge from a library of ontologies and integrating it with CBROnto, a task based ontology comprising common CBR terminology.

Knowledge Representation, Reasoning and Declarative Problem Solving
2003Knowledge management and knowledge-based intelligence are areas of importance in the economy and society, and to exploit them fully and efficiently it is necessary both to represent and reason about knowledge via a declarative interface whose input language is based on logic. In this book, originally published in 2003, Chitta Baral shows exactly how to

Modelling Grammatical and Lexical Knowledge: A Declarative Approach
2005This paper depicts the fundamentals of a computational grammar able to provide adequate representations for Portuguese simple sentences with several kinds of ambiguities. Besides the description of the architecture of the system proposed and the way it works, the paper focuses on the discussion of the nature of the specifications to encode in order to ...
