Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Behaviour of unstrengthened and DE CFRP-strengthened high-strength concrete deep beams with web openings

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials
The existing web opening created in shear span of concrete deep beams due to reasons such as accommodating utility pipes or cables resulting in a reduction in a load bearing capacity.

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Crack propagation modeling of strengthening reinforced concrete deep beams with CFRP plates

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2021
Fracture analysis of reinforced concrete deep beam strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates was carried out. The present research aimed to discover whether crack propagation in a strengthened deep beam follows linear elastic ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.

Deflection of carbon dioxide laser and helium‐neon laser beams in a long‐pulse relativistic electron beam diode [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Deflection of carbon dioxide and helium‐neon laser beams has been used to measure plasma and neutral density gradients during the operating mode and after the shorting time of a long‐pulse field‐emission electron beam diode.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Measurement of long‐pulse relativistic electron beam perpendicular‐ to‐parallel velocity ratio by Cerenkov emission and radiation darkening on a glass plate [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
We report measurements of the ratio of the perpendicular velocity to the parallel velocity, α= v⊥ /v∥, of a relativistic electron beam gyrating in a magnetic field by the use of (1) Cerenkov emission from a glass plate, detected by a gated microchannel ...
