Fabrication of monolithic microfluidic channels in diamond with ion beam lithography

open access: yes, 2017
In the present work, we report on the monolithic fabrication by means of ion beam lithography of hollow micro-channels within a diamond substrate, to be employed for microfluidic applications.

Optical trapping with a perfect vortex beam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The authors would like to thank the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for funding.Vortex beams with different topological charge usually have different profiles and radii of peak intensity.

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Modification of strut effectiveness factor for reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with CFRP laminates

open access: yesMateriales de Construccion, 2014
This paper proposes a method to modify the strut effectiveness factor in the strut-and-tie model for CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete deep beams.

Deep Inelastic Scattering with the SPS Muon Beam [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics A, 2015
We review results from deep inelastic muon scattering experiments at the SPS which started in 1978, and are still actively pursued today. Key results include the precision measurement of scaling violations and of the strong coupling constant, spin-dependent structure functions, and studies of the internal spin structure of protons and neutrons.

Finite element simulation of reinforced concrete deep beam with opening strengthened with FRP laminates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Deep beams are typically used in tall buildings, transfer floors and offshore structures and have a lot of advantages which make their use the most feasible option in many situations. The building codes do not give any explicit guidance to designing this

Acoustic tractor beam [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Negative radiation forces act opposite to the direction of propagation, or net momentum, of a beam but have previously been challenging to definitively demonstrate.

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.
