Hunting as anthropogenic sink of biomass or source of carrion? A brief case study based on German hunting bags

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Dead biomass is a crucial nutrient source for ecosystems. Although hunting residues can subsidize numerous scavenging organisms and are known to drive important zoogeochemical processes at very different scales in the ecosystem, this has received little attention.

Habitat selection of moose in Sweden in managed boreal forests with Pinus contorta and P. sylvestris

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Human land use can take advantage of using exotic species to increase financial benefits. However, the use of exotic tree species might affect ecosystem functioning, potentially including the habitat use and movement behaviour of animals, modifying their ecological impact, and interactions with human land use.

Behavioral response of moose Alces alces to summer heat stress

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Minnesota moose are heat‐stressed during summers, which is adversely impacting their survival. We used both movement and activity data to explore the behavioral responses of Minnesota moose experiencing heat stress, termed ‘hot moose events' or HMEs, to understand how both ambient temperature and available habitat contribute to the ability of these ...

Road mortality mitigation for red wolves requires a landscape approach

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
In 1980, the red wolf Canis rufus was declared extinct in the wild. However, starting in 1987, a captive breeding program allowed for a reintroduction effort in and around Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (Alligator River NWR), North Carolina, USA. In 2012 the wild red wolf population peaked at about 120 individuals.

Space and resource use by American crow Corvus brachyrhynchos in an area endemic for chronic wasting disease

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
American crow Corvus brachyrhynchos is a common species throughout North America. Crows play a role in the ecology of multiple diseases and a single laboratory experiment has shown the potential for crows to pass infectious prions, such as those associated with chronic wasting disease (CWD), in their feces after being force‐fed with infected material ...
