Conflict Social Networks of Critically Endangered Alpine Musk Deer in Captivity and Relationships With Fecal Steroid Hormones 圈养极危物种马麝的冲突社交网络及其与粪便类固醇激素的关联

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We conducted a grouping study on 52 adult musk deer to investigate whether group sex composition modulates aggressive behavior and stress response in captive musk deer. We found that the conflict interactions of all‐male groups were significantly more than those of mixed groups, and compared with the mixed groups, the conflict interactions of all‐male ...

Wild Pigs (Sus scrofa) Stand Their Ground: Investigating Flight Response, or Lack Thereof, to Perceived Predation Risk 野猪坚守原地:探究其面对感知捕食风险时的逃逸反应 (或无逃逸行为)

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We used automated behavioral response systems (ABRs) to assess invasive wild pig (Sus scrofa) behavioral response to four auditory playbacks: humans, coyote vocalizations (Canis latrans), pigs in distress, and barred owl (Strix varia) calls. Wild pigs had a significant flight response to human playbacks, but 68% of pigs did not flee.

Heightened threats to small woodland caribou populations in Canada and key considerations for their persistence Menaces pesant sur les petites populations de caribou des bois au Canada et considérations essentielles à leur rétablissement

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, EarlyView.
Abstract Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are one of the most iconic wildlife species in Canada. These large ungulates depend on undisturbed, interconnected assemblages of mature and old‐growth conifer forests for survival, and exhibit life‐history traits typical of K‐selected species (i.e., low reproductive rates, long generation times, and slow ...

Field evaluations of thermal optics and tracking tunnels for small mammal surveys at airports and grass dominated habitats

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Small mammal survey tools are needed at airports to help inform aircraft strike‐risk management. We evaluated thermal optics and tracking tunnels as small mammal survey tools. We conclude that thermal optics would not be a viable survey tool for mouse‐sized mammals (19‐41 g) at airfields and other thick grass habitats unless grass height was maintained

Remotely enabling live traps for mesopredator capture: Potential benefits and use of time‐controlled trap access

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
A method is described for remotely controlling the interval of time available for live trap animal capture using a programmable door which controls animal access to a readied live trap within a housing structure. Based on management objectives or other considerations, utilities include the ability to eliminate repeat site visits in some contexts to set
