Probabilistic default reasoning

We present an algorithm that is able to integrate uncertain probability statements of different default levels. In case of conflict between statements of different levels the statements of the lower levels are ignored. The approach is applicable to inference networks of arbitrary structure including loops and cycles.

This paper derives a new and surprisingly low complexity result for inference in a new form of Reiter's propositional default logic (1980). The problem studied here is the default inference problem whose fundamental importance was pointed out by Kraus, Lehmann, and Magidor (1980).

Ray Reiter has worked out Default Logic during his sabbatical leave in 1979, at Imperial College in London. The paper on Default Logic then appeared in the landmark issue of the Artificial Intelligence Journal on “Commonsense Reasoning” [1].
