Deformable mirrors for all seasons and reasons

Applied Optics, 1982
The use of adaptive optics has been increasingly proposed as a solution to a variety of optical phase distortion problems. Deformable (rubber) mirror concepts have utilized numerous design techniques for phase distortion correction. Deformable mirror requirements are reviewed for several applications along with projected requirements to meet the ...

Optimal Active Control of a Deformable Mirror

Journal of Vibration and Control, 2009
A new control design method for active shape control of a dynamic flexible structures with piezoelectric inclusions is developed. It is applied mainly for applications such as deformable mirrors of an adaptive optics system, space-based imaging systems and other applications where deformable mirrors constitute part of the system.

Low-order adaptive deformable mirror

Applied Optics, 1998
We report the main parameters of a nine-electrode bimorph piezoelectric adaptive mirror designed to correct low-order aberrations. We describe measurements of the control coefficients for defocus, astigmatism, pure coma, and spherical aberration of this mirror and the temperature stability of its profile.

Mounting with compliant cylinders for deformable mirrors

Optics Letters, 2015
A method is presented to mount large aperture unimorph deformable mirrors by compliant cylinders (CC). The CCs are manufactured from a soft silicone, and shear testing is performed in order to evaluate the Young's modulus. A scale mirror model is assembled to evaluate mount-induced change of piezoelectric deformation, and its applicability for tightly ...

Methods for the characterization of deformable membrane mirrors

Applied Optics, 2005
We demonstrate two methods for the characterization of deformable membrane mirrors and the training of adaptive optics systems that employ these mirrors. Neither method employs a wave-front sensor. In one case, aberrations produced by a wave-front generator are corrected by the deformable mirror by use of a rapidly converging iterative algorithm based ...

Shape memory composite deformable mirrors

SPIE Proceedings, 2009
This paper deals with some of the critical aspects regarding Shape Memory Composite (SMC) design: firstly some technological aspects concerning embedding technique and their efficiency secondarily the lack of useful numerical tools for this peculiar design.

High-speed deformable mirror system

Applied Optics, 1982
A phase correction device has been developed for a high-power cw 10.6-microm laser beam using a water-cooled piezoelectric actuated deformable mirror system. It is the first HEL deformable mirror designed to provide dynamic high-speed wave front correction while simultaneously providing high-frequency phase modulation at any or all of its fifty-two ...
