Effects of Superheated Steam on Flavonoids and Antioxidant Activity in Tartary Buckwheat Flour

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji
To inhibit the conversion of rutin to quercetin, tartary buckwheat flour was treated with superheated steam and the effects of steam temperature and treatment duration on rutin-degrading enzyme activity, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity were ...

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Pharmaceuticals degradation by UV and UV/H2O2 treatments

open access: yesWater Supply, 2002
The degradation by UV and UV/H2O2 treatments of the pharmaceutical intermediate 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-methylthiol (MMTD-Me) has been investigated and compared to that of its parent compound [5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol (MMTD)] previously studied.

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Prospecting the protein design landscape

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review outlines the current state of various protein design approaches. We discuss the current possibilities enabled by recently released tools, highlight future avenues to pursue in protein design, and underscore the crucial role of key databases and resources for successful protein design workflows.

Enrichment and characterization of steroid-degrading microbes for targeted removal of steroid hormone micropollutants in small-scale wastewater treatment solutions

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
In remote areas, wastewater treatment typically occurs directly at the source in decentralized systems, which often work well in removing biochemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, and phosphorus, but not micropollutants like pharmaceuticals and steroid ...

Degradation of microcystin by biofilm in practical treatment facility

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2002
Potential for degradation of microcystin by biofilm was examined by some batch experiments using biofilm scraped from practical biological treatment facility combined with conventional treatment processes. The viable cells of Microcystis viridis, which produced microcystin LR, RR and YR were degraded at 6 to 10 days by the addition of biofilm.

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.
