Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the most widely used brominated flame retardant on the market. It has been detected in various environmental samples, and a growing body of evidence has demonstrated its toxic effects on living organisms. In this study, we report the enrichment and phylogenetic identification of bacteria that debrominate TBBPA to ...

Previously, we demonstrated the reductive dehalogenation of dichlorobenzene (DCB) isomers to monochlorobenzene (MCB), and MCB to benzene in sediment microcosms derived from a chlorobenzene-contaminated site. In this study, enrichment cultures were established for each DCB isomer and each produced MCB and trace amounts of benzene as end products.

Dichloromethane Fermentation by a Dehalobacter sp. in an Enrichment Culture Derived from Pristine River Sediment [PDF]
ABSTRACT Dichloromethane (DCM) as the sole substrate supported growth of a Dehalobacter sp. in an enrichment culture derived from noncontaminated river sediment. DCM was not reductively dechlorinated, and acetate was produced, indicating DCM fermentation and further suggesting Dehalobacter

The dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins was examined in an enrichment culture (KFL culture) that contained two phylotypes of Dehalobacter, FTH1 and FTH2. The KFL culture dechlorinated 2,3,4,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 2,3,4-trichorobiphenyl (2,3,4-TriCB), and 1,2,3-trichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1,2,3-TriCDD).

Chlorophenols are widely used as biocides, leading them to being prevalent environmental contaminants that pose toxic threats to ecosystems. In this study, a Dehalobacter species strain TCP1 was isolated from a digester sludge sample, which is able to dechlorinate 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) to 4-monochlorophenol (4-MCP) with H2 as the sole ...

Bioaugmentation with DistinctDehalobacterStrains Achieves Chloroform Detoxification in Microcosms
Environmental Science & Technology, 2014Chloroform (CF) is a widespread groundwater contaminant not susceptible to aerobic degradation. Under anoxic conditions, CF can undergo abiotic and cometabolic transformation but detoxification is generally not achieved. The recent discovery of distinct Dehalobacter strains that respire CF to dichloromethane (DCM) and ferment DCM to nonchlorinated ...

Large Carbon Isotope Fractionation during Biodegradation of Chloroform by Dehalobacter Cultures
Environmental Science & Technology, 2012Compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) has been applied to monitor bioremediation of groundwater contaminants and provide insight into mechanisms of transformation of chlorinated ethanes. To date there is little information on its applicability for chlorinated methanes.

Anaerobic mineralization of 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP) was achieved by a synthetic anaerobe community comprising a highly enriched culture of Dehalobacter sp. phylotype FTH1 acting as a reductive debrominator; Clostridium sp. strain Ma13 acting as a hydrogen supplier via glucose fermentation; and a novel 4-chlorophenol-degrading anaerobe ...

Dehalobacter alkaniphilus sp. nov.
Through pangenomic analyses we have found two new multi-strain species of Dehalobacter, in addition to the previously validly published Dehalobacter restrictus. The two species currently have placeholder names in the GTDB, thus we proposed these new species names instead.openaire +1 more source

We developed standard curves based on plasmids containing a 16S rRNA gene of a member of one of the three genera Dehalobacter, Desulfitobacterium, and Dehalococcoides. A large difference in amplification efficiency between the standard curves was observed ranging from 1.5 to 2.0.
