Ammonia assimilation in Bacillus polymyxa. 15N NMR and enzymatic studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Pathways of ammonia assimilation into glutamic acid and alanine in Bacillus polymyxa were investigated by 15N NMR spectroscopy in combination with measurements of the specific activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate ...

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

Characterization of the human omega-oxidation pathway for omega-hydroxy-very-long-chain fatty acids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) have long been known to be degraded exclusively in peroxisomes via beta-oxidation. A defect in peroxisomal beta-oxidation results in elevated levels of VLCFAs and is associated with the most frequent inherited ...

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...

Role of Seasonality and Fire in Regulating the Enzymatic Activities in Soils Covered by Different Vegetation in a Mediterranean Area

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
As they quickly respond to environmental conditions, soil enzymes, involved in nutrient cycles, are considered good indicators of soil quality. The Mediterranean area is a peculiar environment for climatic conditions and for fire frequency.

Isolation and Characterization of Glycerol-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase-Defective Mutants of \u3cem\u3eNeurospora crassa\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
Three glycerol-nonutilizing mutants deficient in the mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.99.5) were isolated from inlts derivatives of Neurospora crassa following inositolless death at elevated temperatures on minimal glycerol ...

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is stimulated by red light irradiation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Light at different wavelengths has distinct effects on keratinocyte viability and metabolism. UVA light abrogates metabolic fluxes. Blue and green light have no effect on metabolic fluxes, while red light enhanced oxidative phosphorylation by promoting fatty acid oxidation. Keratinocytes are the primary constituents of sunlight‐exposed epidermis.

Synergistic Effects of Exogenous Nutrient Ions on the Real-Time Cadmium Extraction by an Accumulator

open access: yesAgriculture
Bidens tripartita L. is a cadmium (Cd) accumulator. However, the real-time influx or efflux of Cd2+ around its root apex has not yet been performed. The object of this experiment was to compare the roles of added ions in solution on dynamic Cd extraction
