Extra-adrenal regeneration of glucocorticoids by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1:physiological regulator and pharmacological target for energy partitioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The major glucocorticoid in man, cortisol, plays important roles in regulating fuel metabolism, energy partitioning and body fat distribution.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Seasonal fluctuations of bacterial population and microbial activity in soils cultivated with eucalyptus and pinus

open access: yesScientia Agricola, 2004
The accumulation and decomposition of litter in soils under forests depend on climatic and biotic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of monthly rainfall and temperature on total bacteria, and on the dehydrogenase and respiration microbial ...

In vitro effects of petroleum refinery wastewater on dehydrogenase activity in marine bacterial strains

open access: yesRevista Ambiente & Água, 2010
Toxicity of oil refinery effluent on four bacteria strains isolated from refinery effluent impacted river water sample was assessed via dehydrogenase assay.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 and gelsolin identified as novel invasion-modulating factors in conditioned medium of pancreatic cancer cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Conditioned medium (CM) from clonal sub-populations of the pancreatic cancer cell line, MiaPaCa-2 with differing invasive abilities, were examined for their effect on in vitro invasion.

Identification of 3-deoxyglucosone dehydrogenase as aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (retinaldehyde dehydrogenase 1) [PDF]

open access: yesBiochimie, 2007
One of the metabolic fates of 3-deoxyglucosone, a product of protein deglycation and a potent glycating agent, is to be oxidized to 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate, but the enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is presently unknown. Starting from human erythrocytes, which are known to convert 3-deoxyglucosone to 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate, we have purified to near ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Identification of putative methanol dehydrogenase (moxF) structural genes in methylotrophs and cloning of moxF genes from Methylococcus capsulatus bath and Methylomonas albus BG8 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
An open-reading-frame fragment of a Methylobacterium sp. strain AM1 gene (moxF) encoding a portion of the methanol dehydrogenase structural protein has been used as a hybridization probe to detect similar sequences in a variety of methylotrophic bacteria.

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Flushing of Soils Highly Contaminated with Cd Using Various Washing Agents Derived from Sewage Sludge

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The suitability of sewage-sludge derived washing agents (SS_WAs) (dissolved organic matter DOM; humic-like substances HLS; soluble humic substances SHS), was assessed for removing Cd from highly contaminated (300 mg/kg) sandy clay loam and clay.
