Foundations of e-Democracy [PDF]

open access: yesMagazine Communications of the ACM Volume 61 Issue 8, August 2018 Pages 31-34, 2017
The Internet revolution of democracy, which will transform earthly representative democracies by employing the communication and collaboration capabilities of the Internet, has yet to come. Here, we enlist the wisdom of our forefathers to lead the way. By consulting the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, we distill core values of

Peripheral blood proteome biomarkers distinguish immunosuppressive features of cancer progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Immune status significantly influences cancer progression. This study used plasma proteomics to analyze benign 67NR and malignant 4T1 breast tumor models at early and late tumor stages. Immune‐related proteins–osteopontin (Spp1), lactotransferrin (Ltf), calreticulin (Calr) and peroxiredoxin 2 (Prdx2)–were associated with systemic myeloid‐derived ...

Determination of ADP/ATP translocase isoform ratios in malignancy and cellular senescence

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The individual functions of three isoforms exchanging ADP and ATP (ADP/ATP translocases; ANTs) on the mitochondrial membrane remain unclear. We developed a method for quantitatively differentiating highly similar human ANT1, ANT2, and ANT3 using parallel reaction monitoring. This method allowed us to assess changes in translocase levels during cellular

An open democracy [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Cancer, 2007
Sovereign power is retained and shared by the citizens of a country. Using electoral tools, governing structures are formed to ensure protection of national interests. As with any institution, proper control of the government guarantees its adherence to the tasks delegated to it by its citizens.

Loss of primary cilia promotes EphA2‐mediated endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in the ovarian tumor microenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of primary cilia in endothelial cells promotes EndMT and vascular abnormalities in the ovarian tumor microenvironment through EphA2 activation. Using human samples, in vitro models, and endothelial‐specific Kif3a‐knockout mice, we show that primary cilia loss drives the acquisition of cancer‐associated fibroblast‐like phenotypes, thereby ...

Harmonizing the fundamental principles of economy and moral philosophy

open access: yesFocus on Research in Contemporary Economics, 2020
In its simplest form, morality refers to the value judgments that we define as "good" or "right" in human relations. Here, questions arise such as "what is understood from good? what is the criteria?, and what is good for whom?".

Measure and collapse of participatory democracy in a two-party system [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Stat. Mech. (2015) P10006, 2015
Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so (Galileo Galilei). According to the above sentence we do not ask why we need to measure democracy but if it is possible to measure something which is not unequivocally defined. Although, it is unlikely a final agreement on the definition of democracy, the idea that it is a form of ...

Iron‐dependent lysosomal LDL oxidation induces the expression of scavenger receptor A in human THP‐1 monocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In human monocytic cells THP‐1, a limited uptake of native—not oxidized—LDL/VLDL induced expression of scavenger receptor A and cellular adhesion. Induction was inhibited by lysosomotropic (WR‐1065) and lipophilic (BHT) antioxidants and by siRNAs against ferritinophagy.
