Expression patterns of melanin-related genes are linked to crypsis and conspicuousness in a pumpkin toadlet. [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol
Abstract Colour signals play pivotal roles in different communication systems, and the evolution of these characters has been associated with behavioural ecology, integumentary production processes and perceptual mechanisms of the species involved. Here, we present the first insight into the molecular and histological basis of skin colour polymorphism ...

Investigating signal modalities of aposematism in a poison frog

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 7, Page 1003-1009, July 2023., 2023
In this manuscript, we asked if predators avoid poison frogs by their sense of smell alone. We found that experienced predators can indeed avoid poison by smell alone, indicating the importance of examining other modalities of potential communication in aposematic vertebrates.

Unusual whitish eggs in the poison frogDendrobates auratusGirard, 1855 [PDF]

open access: yesTropical Zoology, 2012
Poison frogs in the genus Dendrobates (sensu Grant et al. 2006) are known to lay black pigmented eggs. During a field study in May 2010 in central Panama, a captive pair of wild-caught adult Dendrobates auratus laid a clutch of whitish eggs. The eggs developed and metamorphic froglets were similar in size and color to that of age-matched normal-colored

Poison Frog Colors Are Honest Signals Of Toxicity, Particularly For Bird Predators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Antipredator defenses and warning signals typically evolve in concert. However, the extensive variation across taxa in both these components of predator deterrence and the relationship between them are poorly understood.

An investigation of toe‐tapping behaviour in anurans by analysis of online video resources

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 312, Issue 3, Page 158-162, November 2020., 2020
A database of online videos featuring feeding toads and frogs, particularly Dendrobatidae, was constructed in order to investigate factors affecting toe tapping, a behaviour which has been noted to accompany feeding across various taxa. The collected data revealed 19 species which have previously not been reported to exhibit the behaviour and a ...

Evolutionary integration of the frog cranium

open access: yesEvolution, Volume 74, Issue 6, Page 1200-1215, June 2020., 2020
Abstract Evolutionary integration (covariation) of traits has long fascinated biologists because of its potential to elucidate factors that have shaped morphological evolution. Studies of tetrapod crania have identified patterns of evolutionary integration that reflect functional or developmental interactions among traits, but no studies to date have ...

Non-native Amphibian Pet Trade via Internet in Poland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Overharvesting and trade in amphibian populations is one of the causes of their global decline. Online trade not only encourages the exploitation of an increasing number of rare and endangered amphibian species from all over the world but also ...

Primer registro de eritrismo parcial en una especie de rana venenosa de la familia Dendrobatidae: Epipedobates darwinwallacei Cisneros-Heredia y Yánez-Muñoz, 2010 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
We report the first recorded case of partial erythrism in a frog belonging to the family Dendrobatidae, Mindo Poison Frog Epipedobates darwinwallacei Cisneros-Heredia and Yánez-Muñoz, 2010. In February 2019, we found an individual in the valley of Mindo,

Sexual selection and intra-femalecompetition in the green poison-dart frog, Dendrobates auratus [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Behaviour, 1989
Observations on the mating and parental behaviour of the green poison-dart frog were used to test two hypotheses for the function of female-female competition in this species. The hypothesis that females compete to monopolize as many mates as possible was not supported because: (1) male territoriality was associated with competition for females; (2 ...
