Body size but not warning signal luminance influences predation risk in recently metamorphosed poison frogs. [PDF]
During early development many aposematic species have bright and conspicuous warning appearance, but have yet to acquire chemical defenses, a phenotypic state which presumably makes them vulnerable to predation. We deployed artificial prey of green‐and‐black poison frogs in the field, and show that rates of attack by bird predators were significantly ...

Investigating signal modalities of aposematism in a poison frog
In this manuscript, we asked if predators avoid poison frogs by their sense of smell alone. We found that experienced predators can indeed avoid poison by smell alone, indicating the importance of examining other modalities of potential communication in aposematic vertebrates.

Unusual whitish eggs in the poison frogDendrobates auratusGirard, 1855 [PDF]
Poison frogs in the genus Dendrobates (sensu Grant et al. 2006) are known to lay black pigmented eggs. During a field study in May 2010 in central Panama, a captive pair of wild-caught adult Dendrobates auratus laid a clutch of whitish eggs. The eggs developed and metamorphic froglets were similar in size and color to that of age-matched normal-colored

An investigation of toe‐tapping behaviour in anurans by analysis of online video resources
A database of online videos featuring feeding toads and frogs, particularly Dendrobatidae, was constructed in order to investigate factors affecting toe tapping, a behaviour which has been noted to accompany feeding across various taxa. The collected data revealed 19 species which have previously not been reported to exhibit the behaviour and a ...

Evolutionary integration of the frog cranium
Abstract Evolutionary integration (covariation) of traits has long fascinated biologists because of its potential to elucidate factors that have shaped morphological evolution. Studies of tetrapod crania have identified patterns of evolutionary integration that reflect functional or developmental interactions among traits, but no studies to date have ...

AbstractToe-tapping, the quick movement of the middle toes of the hind legs, has been observed in many frogs and toads, and is usually associated with feeding, calling, or courtship behaviors. While plenty of observations of toe-tapping exist for different species, experimental evidence regarding the stimuli triggering this behavior is almost non ...

We conducted a survey testing for the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) in four lowland sites in Costa Rica to identify local host‐pathogen dynamics and to describe the abiotic environment for this pathogen. We found evidence that lowland study sites exhibit enzootic dynamics with low infection intensity and moderate to high ...

Adult poison dart frogs avoid potential heterospecific competitors using their sense of smell
Little is known about the use of chemical senses in frogs. Using a two‐choice testing arena, we tested the reaction of adult poison dart frogs to different odours. We show first evidence of the avoidance of heterospecific odours and conclude that olfaction in these frogs plays a more prominent role than previously believed.
