AbstractToe-tapping, the quick movement of the middle toes of the hind legs, has been observed in many frogs and toads, and is usually associated with feeding, calling, or courtship behaviors. While plenty of observations of toe-tapping exist for different species, experimental evidence regarding the stimuli triggering this behavior is almost non ...

We conducted a survey testing for the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) in four lowland sites in Costa Rica to identify local host‐pathogen dynamics and to describe the abiotic environment for this pathogen. We found evidence that lowland study sites exhibit enzootic dynamics with low infection intensity and moderate to high ...

New Piperidine alkaloids from fire ants are not sequestered by the green and black poison frog ( Dendrobates auratus ) [PDF]
Neotropical poison frogs possess alkaloid-based antipredator defenses which they sequester from a diet of arthropods such as oribatid mites and myrmicine ants.

Dietary source for skin alkaloids of Dendrobatid poison frogs [PDF]
Žabe porodice Dendrobatidae sadrže otrovne alkaloide u kožnim žlijezdama. Dugo se smatralo da ih same sintetiziraju, no istraživanjem je dokazano kako su alkaloidi ipak porijeklom od malih člankonožaca kojima se hrane.

Dry-season retreat and dietary shift of the dart-poison frog Dendrobates tinctorius (Anura: Dendrobatidae) [PDF]
A precipitação sazonal afeta a dinâmica das florestas tropicais e o comportamento das espécies que fazem parte desse ecossistema. A relação positiva entre os padrões de atividade dos anfíbios e a precipitação já foi demonstrada repetidas vezes.

Adult poison dart frogs avoid potential heterospecific competitors using their sense of smell
Little is known about the use of chemical senses in frogs. Using a two‐choice testing arena, we tested the reaction of adult poison dart frogs to different odours. We show first evidence of the avoidance of heterospecific odours and conclude that olfaction in these frogs plays a more prominent role than previously believed.

Tap dancing frogs: Posterior toe tapping and feeding in Dendrobates tinctorius
Various species of amphibians are known to tap their toes, but the precise function of this behavior remains mysterious. We demonstrated that Dendrobates tinctorius poison frogs tap more while feeding, especially in the presence of a conspecific. Tap rate was also higher when prey was accessible and when on pliable surfaces. We suggest tapping may stir

A cognitive map in a poison frog [PDF]
© 2019. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd A fundamental question in cognitive science is whether an animal can use a cognitive map. A cognitive map is a mental representation of the external world, and knowledge of one’s place in this world ...
