The efficiency of indicator groups for the conservation of amphibians in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The adequate selection of indicator groups of biodiversity is an important aspect of the systematic conservation planning. However, these assessments differ in the spatial scale, in the methods used and in the groups considered to accomplish this task ...

Diet of Ameerega braccata (Steindachner, 1864) (Anura: Dendrobatidae) from Chapada dos Guimarães and Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
The understanding of feeding habits is important for anurans in general, both from an ecological and a phylogenetic perspective. For diurnal poison frogs belonging to the Dendrobatidae family, diet aspects play a crucial role in their defense and ...

Expression patterns of melanin‐related genes are linked to crypsis and conspicuousness in a pumpkin toadlet

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 15, August 2025.
Abstract Colour signals play pivotal roles in different communication systems, and the evolution of these characters has been associated with behavioural ecology, integumentary production processes and perceptual mechanisms of the species involved. Here, we present the first insight into the molecular and histological basis of skin colour polymorphism ...

Oviposition and father presence reduce clutch cannibalism by female poison frogs

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2019
Background The consumption of conspecific young by adult individuals is a common phenomenon across various animal taxa. Possible adaptive benefits of such behaviour include the acquisition of nutrients, decreased competition for one’s own offspring, and ...

The Constructive Neutral Evolution of Behaviour

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
We explain how constructive neutral evolution (CNE) can lead to the evolution of nonfunctional behavioural complexity, highlighting a mechanism that is unknown to behavioural ecologists despite being frequently considered by molecular biologists. We summarise indirect evidence that suggests behavioural CNE has occurred and outline how the hypothesis ...

The Evolutionarily Dynamics of Aposematism: a Numerical Analysis of Co-Evolution in Finite Populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The majority of species are under predatory risk in their natural habitat and targeted by predators as part of the food web. During the evolution of ecosystems, manifold mechanisms have emerged to avoid predation.

Hide and Seek: Species Detectability in a Biodiversity Hotspot Increased by Environmental DNA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
We demonstrated through Bayesian modeling that eDNA metabarcoding offers equivalent or higher detectability than traditional field inventory techniques for anuran species in a biodiversity hotspot. The number of recorded species was also higher in seven out of ten sampled streams.

The tadpole of the bamboo–breeding poison frog Ranitomeya biolat (Anura: Dendrobatidae)

open access: yesZootaxa, 2008
Ranitomeya biolat occurs in the lowland rainforest of southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia and uses bamboo internodes as a retreat and reproduction site (Morales 1992; Maldonado & Reichle 2007). Unlike other members of the vanzolinii group, which exhibit biparental care of tadpoles (Summers & McKeon 2004), we have observed that R.

Generation length of the world's amphibians and reptiles

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2025, Issue 7, July 2025.
Variation in life histories influences demographic processes, from adaptive changes to population declines leading to extinction. Among life history traits, generation length offers a critical feature to forecast species' demographic trajectories such as population declines (widely used by the IUCN Red List) and adaptability to environmental change ...

A Biomimetic Enantioselective Approach to the Decahydroquinoline Class of Dendrobatid Alkaloids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Frogs of the neotropical family Dendrobatidae produce a remarkably diverse array of biologically active alkaloids. One of the major classes of these amphibian alkaloids[1] are the decahydroquinolines, which have been isolated not only from skin extracts ...
