Mechanical Distraction Engages a Neuro‐Immune Program to Drive Regenerative Soft‐Tissue Healing in Ilizarov Bone Transport

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ilizarov bone transport accelerates healing of soft‐tissue wounds through unclear mechanisms. In a rat model, sustained mechanical distraction elicits calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP)‐dominant sensory reinnervation, creating a niche that shifts immune cells from inflammatory to repair‐promoting states and speeds re‐epithelialization.

HMGB1/autophagy pathway mediates the atrophic effect of TGF-β1 in denervated skeletal muscle

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2018
Background Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) is a classical modulator of skeletal muscle and regulates several processes, such as myogenesis, regeneration and muscle function in skeletal muscle diseases. Skeletal muscle atrophy, characterized by

Intramuscular injection of skeletal muscle derived extracellular matrix mitigates denervation atrophy after sciatic nerve transection

open access: yesJournal of Tissue Engineering, 2021
Peripheral nerve injury and the associated muscle atrophy has an estimated annual healthcare burden of $150 billion dollars in the United States. When considering the total annual health-related spending of $3.5 trillion, these pathologies alone occupy ...

Expert consensus on neuro‐musculoskeletal functional reconstruction for post‐stroke spastic hemiplegia

open access: yesIbrain, EarlyView.
This expert consensus proposes a patient‐centered pathway for functional reconstruction after post‐stroke spastic hemiplegia: “patient goal–pathophysiologic component–treatment target–functional reassessment.” Treatment selection and sequencing across motor retraining, brain–computer interfaces, peripheral nerve surgery, and tendon/soft‐tissue ...

Inflammation and apoptosis accelerate progression to irreversible atrophy in denervated intrinsic muscles of the hand compared with biceps: proteomic analysis of a rat model of obstetric brachial plexus palsy

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2020
In treating patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsy, we noticed that denervated intrinsic muscles of the hand become irreversibly atrophic at a faster than denervated biceps.

Lipid hydroperoxides and oxylipins are mediators of denervation induced muscle atrophy

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2022
Loss of innervation is a key driver of age associated muscle atrophy and weakness (sarcopenia). Our laboratory has previously shown that denervation induced atrophy is associated with the generation of mitochondrial hydroperoxides and lipid mediators ...

Novel Injectable Supports Long‐Term Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve and Partial Peripheral Nerve Repair

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Following recurrent laryngeal nerve transection in C57BL/6 mice, intramuscular Agrin, neuregulin‐1, and acetylcholine treatment of the thyroarytenoid muscle supported functional reinnervation and preservation of neuromuscular structure at 84 days.

Eletroestimulação seletiva mantem estrutura e função do tibial anterior desnervado de ratos Structure and function of denervated tibialis anteriores are maintained by electrical stimulation in rats

Determining the contributions of protein synthesis and breakdown to muscle atrophy requires non‐steady‐state equations

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2021
Background Ageing and cachexia cause a loss of muscle mass over time, indicating that protein breakdown exceeds protein synthesis. Deuterium oxide (D2O) is used for studies of protein turnover because of the advantages of long‐term labelling, but these ...

Electrical Modalities in the Rehabilitation of Peripheral Nerve Injuries: State of the Literature and Current Clinical Applications

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are a common cause of long‐term motor and sensory disability despite advances in microsurgical repair. Functional recovery following PNI depends not only on axonal regeneration, but also on preservation of distal nerve pathways, maintenance of neuromuscular junction integrity, prevention of irreversible muscle ...
