Denning Ecology of Swift Foxes (Vulpes Velox) in Western Kansas
2023In western Kansas, swift foxes inhabit short and mid-grass prairie as well as cultivated and fallow cropland. I examined the differences in denning ecology of swift foxes inhabiting cropland and those in rangeland. I compared den characteristics, including size of openings, number of openings, distance between openings, direction of openings, shape of

1. From 1993 to 1995, we studied the summer denning ecology of 40 radio‐collared striped skunks Mephitis mephitis (32 females, eight males) during the waterfowl nesting season in Saskatchewan, Canada. 2. Forty‐seven natal dens were used by 30 females. Natal den sites were either underground burrows (55%) or holes underneath buildings (45%), and were

Sea ice and polar bear den ecology at Hopen Island, Svalbard
Marine Ecology Progress Series, 2011The maternity denning of polar bears Ursus maritimus was studied at Hopen Island, Svalbard, Norway, using information collected by direct observation and live-capture of females and cubs during den emergence in spring of 1994 to 2008. The number of maternity dens observed annually varied from 0 to 36.

Notes on the Den Ecology of the Striped Skunk in Iowa
American Midland Naturalist, 1938Den ecology studies of the striped skunk, Mephitis mesomelas avia (Bangs), in Iowa were begun in the fall of 1936. The results of the investigation as presented here span the period of time from the above mentioned season throughout the summer of 1937. The environment of 30 dens are included from the region of study which was located within a radius of

Denning ecology of American black bears in the Cascade Mountains of western Oregon
Ursus, 2013Abstract Little is known about the denning ecology of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Cascade Mountains of western Oregon. Extensive logging during the late 20th century altered the landscape significantly and may have affected the availability and quality of denning habitat.

An Ecological Study of Winter Dens, With Special Reference to the Eastern Skunk
Ecology, 1942What happens in burrows underground when winter snow is on and various carnivores and herbivores are seeking shelter from the cold is a subject that has long intrigued biologists. The fact that such common animals as the woodchuck, weasel, skunk, and cottontail rabbit may often find themselves confronting one another within the narrow confines of a ...

Reproductive Ecology and Characteristics of Denning Sites of the San Clemente Island Fox
The Southwestern Naturalist, 2012Abstract We monitored movements of 27 radiocollared females of the San Clemente Island fox (Urocyon littoralis clementae) during 2007 to determine the proportion that produced litters, number of offspring in weaned litters, chronology of reproduction, and characteristics of denning sites. Of 23 females, three or four produced a total of six pups. Of 13

Life history and den ecology of Octopus briareus Robson in a marine lake
Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1986Abstract Sweetings Pond, a saltwater lake on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, supported a high-density population of Octopus briareus Robson. Females spawned throughout the year in 1982–1983, but spawning peaked in February–March. A number of females spawned early and unsuccessfully in August, 1982.
