Assessing Monetary Policy and Deposit Deregulation

Abstract A measure of disintermediation, accounting for partial deposit deregulation in the late 1970s, outperforms a conventional Reg Q variable in reduced-form GDP models. This improved Reg Q measure eliminates omitted variable bias that gives the impression that monetary policy was not enhanced by flexible exchange rates.
