Is the Benussi Effect a Kinetic Depth Effect?

open access: yesPerceptual and Motor Skills, 1992
Rapid, successive presentations of an eccentric circle pattern and its mirror-image elicited apparent depth and, as has been previously demonstrated for the Benussi effect, there was an increase in apparent depth with an increase in circle eccentricity.

The effect of videoconferencing on the depth perception of observers

open access: yesJournal of Telemedicine and Telecare, 2001
The ability of the human eye to perceive depth was measured using a specially designed instrument. Visual acuity and both monocular and binocular stereoacuity were measured when viewing the instrument directly and via a videoconferencing link. Ten subjects with an average age of 32.5 years (range 24-50) took part in the study.

On the kinetic depth effect

Biological Cybernetics, 1989
The problem of the kinetic depth effect is revisited. We study how many points in how many views are necessary and sufficient to recover structure. The constraints in the cases where the velocities of the image points are known, and the positions of the image points are known with the correspondence between them established, are different and they have

Depth annotations: Designing depth of a single image for depth-based effects

Computers & Graphics, 2018
We present a novel pipeline to generate a depth map from a single image that can be used as input for a variety of artistic depth-based effects. In such a context, the depth maps do not have to be perfect but are rather designed with respect to a desired result.
