ABSTRACTThis paper reviews briefly the viral, bacterial, and toxic diseases borne by shellfish that are transmissible to man. Methods available to cleanse or depurate contaminated bivalves are also presented. Each method is evaluated with regard to 1) present and past use, 2) economic cost benefits, and 3) ability to prevent disease transmission.

Uptake and depuration of pharmaceuticals in aquatic invertebrates
Environmental Pollution, 2012The uptake and depuration of a range of pharmaceuticals in the freshwater shrimp (Gammarus pulex) and the water boatman (Notonecta glauca) was studied. For one compound, studies were also done using the freshwater snail Planobarius corneus. In G. pulex, bioconcentration factors (BCFs) ranged from 4.6 to 185,900 and increased in the order moclobemide ...

Uptake and depuration of 63Ni by Mytilus edulis
Science of The Total Environment, 1998The uptake and depuration of Ni (as radioisotope 63Ni) by Mytilus edulis (Mollusca: Bivalvia) has been investigated in a laboratory mesocosm. Nickel was reversibly held on low energy surface sites of estuarine suspended particulate matter (SPM), with a partition coefficient of the order 10(3) ml g-1, resulting in approximately 80% of radioisotopic Ni ...

Depuration kinetics of hepatitis A virus in clams
Food Microbiology, 2014The efficacy and dynamic of depuration for the removal of hepatitis A virus (HAV) contamination were evaluated under experimental conditions using Manila clams previously subjected to bioaccumulation with this virus. Five independent trials were assayed in a closed experimental system with a total volume of approximately 1750 l, using clam batches of ...

Seawater Ozonization and Shellfish Depuration
Ozone: Science & Engineering, 1979Abstract French coastal water pollution has necessitated construction of shellfish depuration stations. Physical and chemical studies indicated that while ozone and bromates are absent from ozonized seawater, there is an increase in dissolved oxygen and residual oxidants.

Uptake and depuration of petroleum hydrocarbons by crayfish
Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1981No differences were noted in the amount of naphthalene uptake (approximately 125 micrograms) by individual crayfish exposed for 1, 2, or 4 hr at 25 degree C in open, non-aerated glass jars containing 14C-naphthalene-5% of a water-soluble fraction (WSF) of No. 2 fuel oil. The cephalothorax, containing the hepatopancreas (a food absorption organ), showed

Results of depuration studies of mussels collected from chronically polluted sites and those collected after a fuel oil spill tend to confirm laboratory-deduced indications that the rate of depuration decreases as the exposure time increases. Chronically polluted mussels lost their accumulated hydrocarbons with half-lives for depuration that varied ...

Bacterial Agents in Shellfish Depuration
2018The shellfish producers world-wide consider depuration as one of the main options for preserving the viability of their industry. The faster rate of bacterial elimination from polluted shellfish that can be achieved in a recirculating system was confirmed by K. Sangrungruang.
