Mating and fecundity of Dermatophagoides farinae
Experimental & Applied Acarology, 2002Studies of the life cycle of cultured Dermatophagoides farinae found that after an initial mating D. farinae females lived for 63.3+/-64.6 (SD) d after their egg production period ended (Arlian and Dippold 1996). The long period after cessation of egg production for D. farinae suggested D.

Development and fecundity of Dermatophagoides farinae (Acari: Pyroglyphidae).
Journal of Medical Entomology, 1996Duration of the life cycle at 16, 23, 30, and 35 degrees C and fecundity at 23 degrees C and 75% RH were determined for the American house dust mite, Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes. Lengths of the life cycles at 23 and 30 degrees C were 35.6 +/- 4.4 and 17.5 +/- 1.2 d, respectively.

Dialyzates from Dermatophagoides farinae were partially purified. Fractionation on HPLC and anion exchange chromatography revealed that the dialyzates consisted of 5 major fractions of glycoprotein whose apparent molecular sizes were 5.1, 4.1, 3.2, and less than 1.35 kD on HPLC.

House-dust mites in clothing and bedding are the source of major allergens. Based on studies of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus only, weekly washing in hot water is recommended to kill dust mites and remove allergens from clothing and bedding. However, in the United States, washing is most often done in warm or cold water, and other mite species are ...

Anaphylaxis after ingestion of beignets contaminated with Dermatophagoides farinae
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1993A 48-year-old man was evaluated for anaphylaxis associated with ingestion of beignets prepared from a commercial mix. Microscopic examination of the patient's beignet mix revealed live Dermatophagoides farinae. Another unopened box from the same source was not infested. Skin test results to aeroallergens and foods, including all beignet mix ingredients,
