Slippery quartz surfaces for anti‐fouling optical windows

open access: yesDroplet, 2023
The surface of camera‐based medical devices is easily smeared by blood and fog during the surgical procedure, causing visual field loss and bringing great distress to both doctors and patients.

Quantum Mechanics Unscrambled [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Is quantum mechanics about 'states'? Or is it basically another kind of probability theory? It is argued that the elementary formalism of quantum mechanics operates as a well-justified alternative to 'classical' instantiations of a probability calculus ...

Consciousness and the Wigner's friend problem

open access: yes, 2006
It is generally agreed that decoherence theory is, if not a complete answer, at least a great step forward towards a solution of the quantum measurement problem.

Biophysics at the coffee shop: lessons learned working with George Oster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Over the past 50 years, the use of mathematical models, derived from physical reasoning, to describe molecular and cellular systems has evolved from an art of the few to a cornerstone of biological inquiry.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Tuning static drop friction

open access: yesDroplet, 2023
The friction force opposing the onset of motion of a drop on a solid surface is typically considered to be a material property for a fixed drop volume on a given surface.

Indistinguishable Particles in Quantum Mechanics: An Introduction

open access: yes, 2005
In this article, we discuss the identity and indistinguishability of quantum systems and the consequent need to introduce an extra postulate in Quantum Mechanics to correctly describe situations involving indistinguishable particles.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Exploring anomalous nanofluidic transport at the interfaces

open access: yesDroplet
Transport of ions and water is essential for diverse physiological activities and industrial applications. As the dimension approaches nano and even angstrom scale, ions and water exhibit anomalous behaviors that differ significantly from the bulk.

Sustainable dropwise condensation enabled ultraefficient heat pipes

open access: yesDroplet, 2023
Heat pipes play a critical role in determining the operations, safety, and energy efficiency of electronics. The main focus to improve the heat pipe performance is on the evaporator design or wicking structures.
