Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Visual recovery of desert pavement surfaces following impacts from vehicle and foot traffic in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Sites of past human activity were investigated to assess the visual recovery of the desert pavement following impacts from human trampling and vehicle traffic.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Characterization and evaluation of environmental units as a management and conservation strategy of the Palmira Desert (Ecuador)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geoheritage and Parks
Globally, deserts are considered as fragile and unique biomes. They not only have the capacity to provide various ecosystem services, and possess great tourism potential and scientific value, but also are susceptible to modifications or alterations in ...

An Analysis of the Discrepancies between MODIS and INSAT-3D LSTs in High Temperatures

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
In many disciplines, knowledge on the accuracy of Land Surface Temperature (LST) as an input is of great importance. One of the most efficient methods in LST evaluation is cross validation.

Adaptation: A Way of Life, Plant and Animal Desert Adaptations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This document provides several activities that show how desert plants and animals are well-adapted to life in the desert and thrive on little moisture and high temperatures. There are extension lessons as well as a drawing activity.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

The high cost of movement in an arid working landscape for an endangered amphibian

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Connectivity is essential for the maintenance of genetic diversity and stability of wildlife populations. Drought and changing precipitation regimes have caused natural aquatic amphibian breeding habitats to disappear or become isolated and have led to ...

The molecular content of the nearby galaxy from IRAS and HI observations [PDF]

open access: yes
Because infrared emission is a very good tracer of mass at high latitudes, by combining it with HI observations it provides a convenient though indirect way of observing the spatial distribution of molecular material.
