Synthesis of Imidazole and Histidine-Derived Cross-Linkers as Analogues of GOLD and Desmosine

Synthesis, 2021
Amino acid derivatives with a central cationic heterocyclic core (e.g., imidazolium) are biologically relevant cross-linkers of proteins and advanced glycation end (AGE) products. Here, imidazolium-containing cross-linkers were synthesized from imidazole

Photolysis and Ozonolysis of Desmosine and Elastolytic Peptides

Connective Tissue Research, 1985
This paper describes the combined effects of photolysis and ozonolysis upon the main interchain crosslinks of elastin, desmosine and isodesmosine. Photolysis of purified (iso)desmosines in solution leads to the cleavage of the pyridinium rings to give lysine and an analogue of glutaconic aldehyde which is deformylated to a stable compound absorbing at ...

Urinary desmosine, elastolysis, and lung disease

Metabolism, 1991
Desmosine is an amino acid specific to elastin. Animal studies suggest that urinary desmosine (UD) represents endogenous elastin degradation. Therefore, UD has previously been used to investigate endogenous elastolysis, but was not elevated in subjects with chronic obstructive airways disease (COAD), although accelerated pulmonary elastolysis is ...

Urine Desmosine is Unrelated to Cigarette Smoking or to Spirometric Function [PDF]

open access: possibleAmerican Review of Respiratory Disease, 1983
We measured urine desmosine by radioimmunoassay in 157 subjects. Desmosine excretion (expressed as desmosine/creatinine ratio) did not correlate with ventilatory function (assessed by spirometry) or with current smoking status or total lifetime cigarette consumption.

Photolysis of Desmosine And Isodesmosine by Ultraviolet Light

1977
It is known that the pyridinium ring of a model compound such as N-methyl pyridinium chloride is cleaved by U.V. radiation at 254 nm. At acid pH the products obtained are methylamine and glutaconaldehyde. Under the same conditions desmosine and isodesmosine are degraded into lysine and probably into the homologous substituted ketone of glutaconaldehyde.

Desmosine Biosynthesis: Nature of Inhibition by D-Penicillamine

Science, 1968
Administration of D-penicillamine and lathyrogens such as β-amino-propionitrile to animals markedly alters connective tissue by preventing the normal cross-linkage of elastin and collagen. It had been shown that β-aminopropionitrile blocks the cross-linkage of elastin and collagen by preventing the initial step in cross-linkage: the conversion of ...

Measurement of desmosine and isodesmosine by capillary zone electrophoresis

Journal of Chromatography A, 1995
Desmosine (DES) and isodesmosine (IDE) were separated and quantitated by a simple and sensitive capillary zone electrophoretic (CZE) method, using hydrostatic injection and direct UV detection at 254 or 185 nm. Two different electrophoretic mobilities for the two isoforms were observed in 90 mM phosphoric acid pH 2.2. The presence of a mixture of amino

Free Desmosine is a Sensitive Marker of Smoke-Induced Emphysema

Lung, 2018
While the elastin-specific crosslinks, desmosine and isodesmosine (DID), are increased in blood, urine, and sputum of patients with clinically documented pulmonary emphysema, the usefulness of DID in detecting early lung injury remains untested. To this end, our laboratory has measured DID in a hamster model of smoke-induced emphysema, involving only ...

Urinary excretion of desmosine in patients with severe burns

Metabolism, 1981
Urinary excretion of total desmosine was measured by a radioimmunoassay in severely burned adult males, as well as in normal adult males. Total urinary desmosine was significantly elevated in all the samples in the burned patients, who had injuries involving more than 19% of total body surface area.
