Pharmacokinetics of Intravenously Administered Desmosine in Sheep
Connective Tissue Research, 1984The pharmacokinetics of desmosine following a 5 mg intravenous dose was determined in five sheep. The biological half-life (t 1/2 beta) of desmosine varied between 81-489 min. Urinary recovery of unchanged desmosine indicated that the compound is not extensively metabolized and that the primary route of elimination is via the kidney.

Desmosine is a predictor of long-term cardiovascular mortality in bronchiectasis
, 2020Introduction: Elastin degradation is a common pathological feature of bronchiectasis (BE) and cardiovascular (CV) disease. Our previous study has shown that elevated levels of serum desmosine (sDES), a degradation product from elastin, is strongly ...

Urinary desmosine as a biomarker in acute lung injury
Biomarkers, 2006Acute lung injury (ALI) is a complex disorder associated with an acute inflammatory response thought to contribute to tissue injury. Desmosine, a cross-linking amino acid present in elastin, is released during matrix degradation and cleared by the kidney.

Accelerating isotope dilution LC-MS-based desmosine quantification for estimating elastin turnover.
BioanalysisAIMS Circulating total desmosine, representing endogenous systemic elastin degradation activity, is an emerging biomarker for mortality risk in several diseases and aging.

Plasma desmosine, a biomarker of elastin degradation, predicts outcomes in coronary artery disease
, 2020Recent evidence from animal studies suggests that elastin degradation accelerates atherosclerosis and increases risk of plaque rupture and subsequent myocardial infarction and stroke. Desmosine is an elastin-specific degradation product.

Fractionation of Urine to Allow Desmosine Analysis by Radioimmunoassay [PDF]
The present study was designed to re-evaluate the radioimmunoassay for desmosine in urine, which is currently used as a measure of elastin metabolism. Using ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration and affinity chromatography it was shown that at least five other compounds in hydrolysates of human urine competed for desmosine in the RIA ...

Incorporation of Labelled Lysine into the Desmosine Cross-bridges in Elastin
Nature, 1966THE isolation and chemical characterization of two new amino-acids, desmosine and isodesmosine, which form bridge-points between peptide chains in elastin has already been described1–3. The isomeric compounds are 1,3,4,5- and 1,2,3,5-tetra-substituted pyridinium salts with the empirical formula C24H40N5O8Cl (as the chloride).

Measurements of Desmosine and Isodesmosine by Mass Spectrometry in COPD
Chest, 2007Application of mass spectrometry (MS) for direct measurements of desmosine (D) and isodesmosine (I) in urine, plasma, and sputum as markers of elastin degradation in patients with alpha(1)-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) and non-AATD-related COPD.In COPD patients, the lungs undergo elastin injury, which can be monitored by measurements of D and I in body

Enrichment and analysis of desmosine and isodesmosine in biological fluids
Journal of Chromatography B: Biomedical Sciences and Applications, 1995A method has been developed for the enrichment and analysis of the elastin crosslinks, desmosine and isodesmosine, in biological fluids and tissues. It is adapted from published methods, offering improved recovery, sensitivity, resolution, and speed of analysis.

Desmosine radioimmunoassay for measuring elastin degradation in vivo.
American Review of Respiratory Disease, 2015Desmosine is a cross-link amino acid unique to elastin. Previous work has shown that during turnover in the body, desmosine is not reused, and that desmosine is not absorbed from the intestine.
