Fingerprinting Desmosine-Containing Elastin Peptides [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, 2015
Elastin is a vital protein of the extracellular matrix of jawed vertebrates and provides elasticity to numerous tissues. It is secreted in the form of its soluble precursor tropoelastin, which is subsequently cross-linked in the course of the elastic fiber assembly.

Fabrication of Insoluble Elastin by Enzyme‐Free Cross‐Linking

open access: yesMacromolecular Bioscience, Volume 23, Issue 11, November 2023., 2023
A technique involving recombinant tropoelastin polymerization, coacervation, and allysine‐mediated cross‐linking with pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) creates artificial elastin with native characteristics. PQQ, covalently attached to magnetic Sepharose beads, enables its repeated use in protein cross‐linking.

Lysyl Oxidases as Targets for Cancer Therapy and Diagnostic Imaging

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 18, Issue 18, September 15, 2023., 2023
Over the past two decades, lysyl oxidases have been recognised as key enzymes in tumour invasion and metastasis, which has spurred efforts to develop inhibitors and molecular probes for therapeutic and imaging purposes, respectively. This review summarises the structural and functional aspects of these unique enzymes in relation to tumour progression ...

Clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and biomolecular analysis of hyaluronic acid in early wound healing of human gingival tissues: A randomized, split‐mouth trial

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, Volume 94, Issue 7, Page 868-881, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Hyaluronic acid (HA) exerts a fundamental role in tissue repair. In vitro and animal studies demonstrated its ability to enhance wound healing. Nevertheless, in vivo human studies evaluating mechanisms involved in oral soft tissue repair are lacking.

Elastic fibers: formation, function, and fate during aging and disease

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 289, Issue 13, Page 3704-3730, July 2022., 2022
Elastic fibers are vital extracellular components of vertebrates providing numerous tissues and organs with the elasticity and resilience required for their function. Here, we review the current knowledge and discuss open questions on the formation, structure, and functions of elastic fibers and how aging and diseases affect their fate over the human ...

The fibrillin microfibril/elastic fibre network: A critical extracellular supramolecular scaffold to balance skin homoeostasis

open access: yesExperimental Dermatology, Volume 30, Issue 1, Page 25-37, January 2021., 2021
Abstract Supramolecular networks composed of fibrillins (fibrillin‐1 and fibrillin‐2) and associated ligands form intricate cellular microenvironments which balance skin homoeostasis and direct remodelling. Fibrillins assemble into microfibrils which are not only indispensable for conferring elasticity to the skin, but also control the bioavailability ...

Elastin haploinsufficiency induces alternative aging processes in the aorta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Elastin, the main component of elastic fibers, is synthesized only in early life and provides the blood vessels with their elastic properties. With aging, elastin is progressively degraded, leading to arterial enlargement, stiffening, and dysfunction ...

The elastin peptide VGVAPG increases CD4+ T-cell IL-4 production in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2021
Background In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung-infiltrating inflammatory cells secrete proteases and participate in elastin breakdown and genesis of elastin-derived peptides (EP).

Fibulin-4 is essential for maintaining arterial wall integrity in conduit but not muscular arteries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in fibulin-4 (FBLN4) lead to autosomal recessive cutis laxa type 1B (ARCL1B), a multisystem disorder characterized by significant cardiovascular abnormalities, including abnormal elastin assembly, arterial ...

Simultaneous Upregulation of Elastolytic and Elastogenic Factors Are Necessary for Regulated Collateral Diameter Expansion

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2022
Background: During arteriogenesis, outward remodeling of the arterial wall expands luminal diameter to produce increased conductance in developing collaterals. We have previously shown that diameter expansion without loss of internal elastic lamina (IEL)
