By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Method of Ear Detection for Maize Seed Based on Fisher Criterion [PDF]
The purpose of this paper is to use machine vision to detect the size, shape, texture and color of maize seed ear. The traditional method is very limited and cannot meet the detection efficiency.

Adaptive band selection snapshot multispectral imaging in the VIS/NIR domain
Hyperspectral imaging has proven its efficiency for target detection applications but the acquisition mode and the data rate are major issues when dealing with real-time detection applications.

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

High efficiency photon counting using stopped light
Single-photon detection and photon counting play a central role in a large number of quantum communication and computation protocols. While the efficiency of state-of-the-art photo-detectors is well below the desired limits, quantum state measurements in

SplitScreen: Enabling efficient, distributed malware detection [PDF]
We present the design and implementation of a novel anti-malware system called SplitScreen. SplitScreen performs an additional screening step prior to the signature matching phase found in existing approaches. The screening step filters out most non-infected files (90%) and also identifies malware signatures that are not of interest (99%).

Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Single photon detection performance of highly disordered NbTiN thin films
We experimentally investigated the detection performance of highly disordered ${{\rm{Nb}}}_{x}{{\rm{Ti}}}_{1-x}{\rm{N}}\,$ based superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs).
