Critical particle size for fractionation by deterministic lateral displacement

Lab on a Chip, 2006
The fractionation of small particles in a liquid based on their size in a micropost array by deterministic lateral displacement was recently demonstrated with unprecedented resolution (L. R. Huang, E. C. Cox, R. H. Austin and J. C. Sturm, Science, 2004, 304, 987-990, ).

Microvesicle fractionation using deterministic lateral displacement effect

The 9th IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems (NEMS), 2014
We demonstrate a novel integrated microfluidic device to separate circulating extracellular vesicles from blood stream using the deterministic lateral displacement principle. The device continuously fractionates extracellular vesicles and cells according to size and membrane flexibility by displacing them perpendicularly to the fluid flow direction in ...

Continuous Particle Separation Through Deterministic Lateral Displacement

Science, 2004
We report on a microfluidic particle-separation device that makes use of the asymmetric bifurcation of laminar flow around obstacles. A particle chooses its path deterministically on the basis of its size. All particles of a given size follow equivalent migration paths, leading to high resolution.

Force driven separation of drops by deterministic lateral displacement

Lab on a Chip, 2012
We investigate the separation of drops in force-driven deterministic lateral displacement (f-DLD), a promising high-throughput continuous separation method in microfluidics. We perform scaled-up macroscopic experiments in which drops settle through a square array of cylindrical obstacles.

Separation of deformable particles in deterministic lateral displacement devices

Physical Review E, 2011
Using numerical simulations, we study the separation of deformable bodies, such as capsules, vesicles, and cells, in deterministic lateral displacement devices, also known as bump arrays. These arrays comprise regular rows of obstacles such as micropillars whose arrangements are shifted between adjacent rows by a fixed amount. We show that, in addition

Breakdown of deterministic lateral displacement efficiency for non-dilute suspensions: A numerical study [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Engineering and Physics, 2015
We investigate the effect of particle volume fraction on the efficiency of deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices. DLD is a popular passive sorting technique for microfluidic applications.

Particle separation using virtual deterministic lateral displacement (vDLD)

Lab Chip, 2014
Sorting of particles measuring 6.6 μm and 7.0 μm has been achieved in a scheme in which lateral displacement is deterministic.

Tipping the balance of deterministic lateral displacement devices using dielectrophoresis

Lab on a Chip, 2009
We report the use of dielectrophoresis (DEP) to achieve tunability, improve dynamic range and open up for the separation of particles with regard to parameters other than hydrodynamic size in deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices. DLD devices have been shown capable of rapidly and continuously separating micrometer sized plastic spheres by ...

High-throughput microalgae sorting based on the deterministic lateral displacement technique

Journal of Chromatography A
Microalgae are a group of photosynthetic organisms that can grow autotrophically, performing photosynthesis to synthesize abundant organic compounds and release oxygen. They are rich in nutritional components and chemical precursors, presenting wide-ranging application prospects.
