The primary aim was to find an explanation for the morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular characteristics of this form of atherosclerosis.

Moderate hyperhomocysteinemia is one of risk factors for arteriosclerotic disease. In diabetic patients, hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for macroangiopathy and mortality. Homocysteinemia is also associated with diabetic microangiopathy, silent stroke, and cognitive impairment.

Pieces of the aorta and heart coronary arteries taken at autopsy of 100 patients who had died of insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus were studied histologically and immunohistologically. Atherosclerosis was more pronounced in diabetes mellitus patients than in patients with normal glycemic indices.
