Hyperglycemia‐ and neuropathy‐induced changes in mitochondria within sensory nerves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Objective This study focused on altered mitochondrial dynamics as a potential mechanism for diabetic peripheral neuropathy ( DPN ). We employed both an in vitro sensory neuron model and an in situ analysis of human intraepidermal nerve fibers ( IENF s ...

Neuropathy in diabetes

open access: yesMedicine, 2006
Diabetic polyneuropathy affects 30–50% of patients with diabetes mellitus. It encompasses several neuropathic syndromes, the commonest being distal symmetrical polyneuropathy or ‘diabetic peripheral neuropathy’ (DPN). Risk factors for DPN include poor glycaemic control and drivers of macrovascular disease including hypertension.

Is resistance to ischaemia of motor axons in diabetic subjects due to membrane depolarization? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The reasons for the resistance to ischaemia of peripheral nerves in diabetics are not well understood. We have now explored whether axonal depolarization underlies this phenomenon, as has previously been proposed.

Rate of neuropathic progression in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy and other peripheral neuropathies: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesBMC Neurology, 2021
Background We aimed to compare neuropathic progression rate between hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) and other peripheral neuropathies, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)

Murine models of human neuropathic pain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Neuropathic pain refers to pain that originates from pathology of the nervous system. Diabetes, infection (herpes zoster), nerve compression, nerve trauma, and autoimmune diseases are examples of diseases that may cause neuropathic pain. Unfortunately no

A study correlating nerve biopsy with clinical diagnosis and its impact on improving management in peripheral neuropathies

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Neurosurgery, 2021
Background: This study attempts to evaluate the utility of nerve biopsy in complementing or redirecting clinical diagnosis. Several factors determine the diagnostic utility of nerve biopsy, the most important being pre-biopsy diagnosis, with higher ...

Nerve Ultrasound Score in Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy

open access: yesMedicina, 2023
Background and Objectives: Studies have suggested that, by applying certain nerve ultrasound scores, demyelinating and axonal polyneuropathies can be differentiated.
