On diagonal loading for minimum variance beamformers
Proceedings of the 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (IEEE Cat. No.03EX795), 2004Minimum variance beamformers are usually complemented with diagonal loading techniques in order to provide robust ness against finite sample size effects. In spite of its usefulness and popularity, some of the insights of this interesting technique have remained inconspicuous for decades.

Sparse RLS adaptive filter with diagonal loading
2012 Conference Record of the Forty Sixth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers (ASILOMAR), 2012In this paper, we propose an adaptive algorithm for sparse identification. The algorithm is based on diagonal loading, reweighting, and coordinate descent iterations. Simulation results show that the algorithm has performance close to the performance of the oracle RLS algorithm with perfect knowledge of the support and yet has as low complexity as O(N)

Proceedings of the 2002 IEEE Radar Conference (IEEE Cat. No.02CH37322), 2003
We develop a beamforming technique called colored diagonal loading. This technique is a generalization of diagonal loading in which the covariance matrix is augmented with a scaled version of a colored matrix as opposed to using the identity matrix as with conventional diagonal loading.

Diagonal Loading Level Estimation For Robust Beamforming
2006 CIE International Conference on Radar, 2006Often in practice the knowledge of the array steering vector is imprecise, the Capon beamformer may suffer considerable performance degradation. In order to improve the robustness of the Capon beamformer, diagonal loading has been a popular method. However, for most of these methods, it is not clear how to choose the appropriate diagonal loading level.

An Improved Diagonal Loading Algorithm
2012Traditional adaptive beamforming methods undergo serious performance degradation in the presence of mismatches between the assumed array response and the true array response. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which belongs to the class of diagonal loading approach, but the diagonal loading factor is computed fully automatically from the array ...

Automatic diagonal loading for Tyler's robust covariance estimator
2016 IEEE Statistical Signal Processing Workshop (SSP), 2016An approach of regularizing Tyler's robust M-estimator of the co-variance matrix is proposed. We also provide an automatic choice of the regularization parameter in the high-dimensional regime. Simulations show its advantage over the sample covariance estimator and Tyler's M-estimator when data is heavy-tailed and the number of samples is small ...

CFAR Adaptive TVAR versus Diagonally Loaded AMF Detectors
2006 Fortieth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers, 2006We consider adaptive detection for interferences that are described by a time-varying autoregressive model of order m, TVAR(m), where the training sample size T is less than the dimension of the adaptive filter (antenna array) M. We discuss the "practical CFARness" of this detector and formulate conditions on its efficiency (CFAR stands for constant ...

Wideband Automatic Diagonal-Loading Beamformers for Acoustic Imaging
2009 2nd International Congress on Image and Signal Processing, 2009The data-independent delay-and-sum beamformer (DAS) is widely used for acoustic imaging applications, although it has lower resolution and worse interference rejection capability than the standard Capon beamformer (SCB). However, the performance of SCB can be degraded by many factors existed in practice, for example, array covariance matrix estimation ...

Robust adaptive beamforming with variable diagonal loading
6th IEE International Conference on 3G and Beyond (05/11182), 2005In this paper, we propose an alternative realization of the robust adaptive linearly constraint minimum variance (LCMV) beamforming which including ellipsoidal uncertainty constraint on the steering vector. More specifically, the genuine steering vector is estimated from the presumed steering vector using recursive steepest descent (RSD) algorithm with

Diagonal Loading for STAP and Its Performance Analysis
2010 6th International Conference on Wireless Communications Networking and Mobile Computing (WiCOM), 2010For the moving target detection with space-time adaptive processing (STAP), the non- homogeneity will cause the covariance matrix estimation error, which substantially results in the STAP performance degradation. Diagonal loading has long been used as a means to improve the robustness of the spatial filter against mismatches in both the desired spatial
