The Bias of the MVDR Beamformer Outputs under Diagonal Loading
Proceedings. (ICASSP '05). IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005., 2006The MVDR beamformer is the most extensively used array processing algorithm and involves inverting the sample covariance matrix. In the snapshot deficient scenario, when the number of sensors is greater than or approximately equal to the number of snapshots, the eigenvalues of the resulting sample covariance matrix are poorly conditioned.

Automatic diagonal loading for Tyler's robust covariance estimator
2016 IEEE Statistical Signal Processing Workshop (SSP), 2016An approach of regularizing Tyler's robust M-estimator of the co-variance matrix is proposed. We also provide an automatic choice of the regularization parameter in the high-dimensional regime. Simulations show its advantage over the sample covariance estimator and Tyler's M-estimator when data is heavy-tailed and the number of samples is small ...

Proceedings of the 2002 IEEE Radar Conference (IEEE Cat. No.02CH37322), 2003
We develop a beamforming technique called colored diagonal loading. This technique is a generalization of diagonal loading in which the covariance matrix is augmented with a scaled version of a colored matrix as opposed to using the identity matrix as with conventional diagonal loading.

Diagonally loaded space-time adaptive detection
Proceedings of 2011 IEEE CIE International Conference on Radar, 2011In this paper, the concept of space-time adaptive detection (STAD) is presented. The diagonally loaded adaptive matched filter (DL-AMF) and the diagonally loaded adaptive coherence estimation (DL-ACE) are analyzed. Their performance is investigated, and the asymptotically analytical expression of the probability of false alarm (PFA) and the probability

Acoustic beamforming through adaptive diagonal loading
2019 IEEE Symposium on Product Compliance Engineering - Asia (ISPCE-CN), 2019Acoustic beamforming is an important technology in microphone array signal processing. It relates to the acquisition of speech signals by intelligent devices in complex environments. Acoustic beamforming is to form spatial directivity of microphone array, enhance desired signal, and suppress interference and noise.

An Improved Diagonal Loading Algorithm
2012Traditional adaptive beamforming methods undergo serious performance degradation in the presence of mismatches between the assumed array response and the true array response. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which belongs to the class of diagonal loading approach, but the diagonal loading factor is computed fully automatically from the array ...

Diagonal Loading Level Estimation For Robust Beamforming
2006 CIE International Conference on Radar, 2006Often in practice the knowledge of the array steering vector is imprecise, the Capon beamformer may suffer considerable performance degradation. In order to improve the robustness of the Capon beamformer, diagonal loading has been a popular method. However, for most of these methods, it is not clear how to choose the appropriate diagonal loading level.

Diagonal Loading for STAP and Its Performance Analysis
2010 6th International Conference on Wireless Communications Networking and Mobile Computing (WiCOM), 2010For the moving target detection with space-time adaptive processing (STAP), the non- homogeneity will cause the covariance matrix estimation error, which substantially results in the STAP performance degradation. Diagonal loading has long been used as a means to improve the robustness of the spatial filter against mismatches in both the desired spatial

Insertion of diagonal loading into the multistage Wiener filter
Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Workshop Proceedings, 2002, 2003Diagonal loading is a well-known technique for adding robustness to beamformer solutions. Diagonal loading will add robustness to steering vector direction-of-arrival mismatch; element position, gain, and/or phase perturbations; "statistical" mismatch due to finite sample support; etc.

A novel alternative to diagonal loading for robust adaptive beamforming
Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2005., 2006Diagonal loading has proved an effective way to improve the robustness of the optimum beamformer. However, the diagonal loading value must be properly chosen to achieve this. In this paper we propose a Bayesian beamformer for dealing with uncertainty in array configuration and source direction of arrival.
