The α-scalar diagonal stability of block matrices

open access: yesLinear Algebra and its Applications, 2006
The paper deals with diagonal stability of block matrices. The author generalizes two results: the characterization of diagonal stability via Hadamard products [cf. \textit{J. F. B. M. Kraaijevanger}, ibid. 151, 245--254 (1991; Zbl 0724.15014)] and the block matrix version of the closure of the positive definite matrices under Hadamard multiplication ...

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

Going viral − Virus‐targeting nanobodies for research, diagnostics and therapy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The increasing prevalence of viral diseases represents a major threat for global human health. Nanobodies, small binding fragments derived from camelid heavy‐chain antibodies, offer versatile tools for viral research, diagnostics, and antiviral therapy.

Super-twisting sliding mode control for carbon fiber multilayer diagonal loom

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
A super-twisting sliding mode controller is proposed for nonlinear system with external disturbance in order to reduce chattering phenomenon. A criterion is obtained that guarantees the convergence of system states in finite time by Lyapunov stability ...

Soft motions encoded by the fold and mediated by conserved hinge sites drive V‐ATPase allosteric machinery and autoinhibition

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Vacuolar H+‐ATPase (V‐ATPase) is a multisubunit rotary proton pump that acidifies intracellular compartments. Using elastic network models, we identified conserved hinge residues that govern its large‐scale functional motions. We show that intrinsically encoded ‘soft modes’ drive critical functional transitions, including rotary catalysis and ...
