AbstractThis article introduces the general characteristics of the diarylethene class of photochromic dye and the structural features that make photochromism possible. It touches on the methodologies employed to synthesize these compounds as well as the influences that typical substitution patterns exert on photocoloration.

Single Molecule Multiphotochromism with Diarylethenes
Accounts of Chemical Research, 2012In single photochromes, the two isomers that are interconverted in photoinduced reactions can serve as on and off states in a molecular switching device. The addition of several photochromic moieties onto a single molecule can allow the processing of more complex logical patterns.

Invisible photochromism of diarylethene derivatives
Chemical Communications, 2008Diarylethene derivatives with oxidized thiophene rings shift their absorption band to a shorter wavelength in the UV region upon photocyclization; no color change was observed during the photochromic reaction, and the invisible photochromism is advantageous for devices used under room light.

Photoinduced Rearrangements of Diarylethenes
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 2016The photocyclization of stilbenes and their heterocyclic analogs has gained major importance in the synthesis of poly(hetero)aromatic compounds. This reaction generally leads to the formation of phenanthrene derivatives or their isosteric heterocyclic analogs. Over the last 15 years, examples of a new type of diarylethene reactions have been published,

A highly sensitive fluorescent sensor for Cd2+ and Zn2+ based on diarylethene with a pyrene unit.
Spectrochimica Acta Part A - Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 2020A novel multifunctional diarylethene fluorescence sensor 1O containing pyrene unit was designed and synthesized. The photochromism and fluorescence photoswitching properties of this diarylethene were studied in detail by irradiation of UV/Vis lights and ...
