Twin pregnancies and the limits of the energetics of gestation and growth hypothesis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The “Energetics of Gestation and Growth” (EGG) hypothesis proposes that human birth timing and the associated secondary altriciality of human newborns is determined by limits in maternal metabolic capacity. According to this model, labor is triggered when the increasing fetal energy requirements exceed the expectant mother's maximum sustained ...

Dichorionic triplets following frozen-thawed poor-stage embryo transfer: a report of two cases and a review

open access: yesReproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 2017
Background We describe two cases of dichorionic triplet pregnancy after a frozen-thawed poor-stage embryo transfer. Main body of the abstract A 39-year-old and a 41-year-old woman underwent ART treatment.

Intertwin birth weight discordance, mode of delivery, and fetal and neonatal outcomes in twin pregnancies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gynecology &Obstetrics, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between intertwin birth weight discordance and fetal and neonatal outcomes in twin pregnancies, and to assess its relationship with mode of delivery. Methods This retrospective cohort study included twin pregnancies delivered at a tertiary referral center.

Neuroimaging Findings and Risk Factors for Brain Injury in Foetuses Treated for Anaemia

open access: yesPrenatal Diagnosis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Characterize neuroimaging findings in foetuses with anaemia and identify associated risk factors. Methods Retrospective cohort study of pregnancies with foetal anaemia (defined as haemoglobin > 2 standard deviations below the gestational age mean) confirmed by foetal blood sampling (FBS) and treated with intrauterine transfusion (IUT)

Incidence of pre‐eclampsia in triplet pregnancies with and without embryo reduction

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To determine the risk of pre‐eclampsia (PE) in triplet pregnancies, with and without embryo reduction, compared to singleton and twin pregnancies. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter study of triplet pregnancies with three live, phenotypically normal fetuses at the 11–13‐week scan and a gestational age at delivery of ≥ 24 ...

Fetal behavior in normal dichorionic twin pregnancy

open access: yes, 2012
Objectives: A prospective study was performed to compare fetal behavioral development in healthy dichorionic twins and singletons, and identify twin intra-pair associations (synchrony) of fetal movements and rest-activity cycles using different criteria ...

Selective feticide reverses intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy in twins discordant for growth: A case report

open access: yesCase Reports in Women's Health, 2023
Twin gestations are associated with an increased risk of intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy (ICP), probably attributed to the elevated pregnancy hormones. We report a case of a dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy, at the third trimester, complicated

Gestational diabetes in multifetal versus singleton pregnancies: A multicenter cohort study

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
Gestational diabetes in multifetal pregnancies was associated with increased maternal morbidity but less adverse neonatal and long‐term offspring outcomes than in singleton pregnancies, suggesting that current diagnostic thresholds derived from singleton gestations may not fully reflect the unique metabolic and clinical characteristics of multifetal ...

Prenatal imaging phenotypes and outcomes of umbilical‐portal‐systemic venous shunts in singleton and twin pregnancies: A historical cohort study

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
This retrospective cohort compared umbilical‐portal‐systemic venous shunts in singleton and twin pregnancies. Type III was the most common subtype in singletons, whereas Type II was the most common in twins. Fetal growth restriction was more frequent in twins, but primary structural anomaly rates were similar.

Selective feticide in dichorionic pregnancies with intracardiac blood aspiration: report of nine cases

open access: yes, 2009
In a twin pregnancy discordant for a chromosomal or structural abnormality, the family is faced with two alternatives: expectant management or selective feticide of the abnormal fetus. Methods of selective feticide differ according to chorionicity due to
