Partial diel vertical migrations in pelagic fish

Journal of Animal Ecology, 2011
1. Field studies on diel vertical migration (DVM) usually report uniform behaviour with population-wide ascents and descents during crepuscular periods. This contrasts partial seasonal migrations of many animal populations, where individuals choose either the resident or the migrant strategy depending on population density, feeding opportunity and ...

Ciliate vertical distribution and diel vertical migration in a eutrophic lake

Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 2008
The diel vertical migration (DVM) behaviour of a heterotrophic ciliate community was monitored in a eutrophic gravel pit lake located near the lower Rhine in Germany. The purpose of the study was to determine whether DVM in ciliates occurred, if this behaviour was species-specific, and to examine factors (predator avoidance, location of prey ...

Diel vertical migration of mesozooplankton in the northern Yellow Sea

Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2021
The Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM), one of the most vital hydrological features of the Yellow Sea, causes a seasonal thermocline from spring to autumn. The diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton is crucial to structural pelagic communities and food webs, and its patterns can be affected by thermocline depth and strength.

Diel vertical migrations of bathypelagic perch fry

Journal of Fish Biology, 2005
The behaviour of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perchPerca fluviatilisas a dominant species in the assemblage of fry in the pelagic of Slapy Reservoir (Czech Republic), was studied during late May and mid‐June 2002 using acoustic methods and complementary net catches.

Diel Vertical Migration in Lakes

2009
Diel vertical migration of zooplankton in lakes has often been described and is obviously a common phenomenon. Most studies were confined to a few days, few sample times and depths. Therefore, most papers are rather anecdotal, lacking sufficient details to get insight into temporal development and underlying mechanisms.

Diel vertical migration of fish in a Neotropical reservoir

Marine and Freshwater Research, 2016
Vertical distribution of fish was studied immediately upstream of the Três Marias hydroelectric power plant dam from December 2010 to December 2011. Eighteen field trips were conducted for hydroacoustic sampling over a period of 24 h each time, with 6-h diel sampling intervals within each of the 18 sample dates.

Not Being Eaten I: Diel Vertical Migration

2023
Abstract Early near-surface zooplankton sampling revealed more of many species being caught at night than in daylight. Hypotheses abounded, several still current. For many species the answer is daily (“diel”) vertical migration (DVM): down to darker waters during daylight, up to better feeding at night.

Diel vertical migration of zooplankton and mesopelagic fish in the Arabian Sea

Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 2000
No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Acoustic (153 kHzADCP and 12 kHz hull transducers), and MOCNESS (MOC! and MOClO) tow data collected in the Arabian Sea during intermonsoon (April/May) and monsoon (August) periods document substantial die!

Diel vertical migration arising in a habitat selection game

Theoretical Ecology, 2012
Predator and prey react to each other, adjusting their behavior to maximize their fitness and optimizing their food intake while keeping their predation risk as low as possible. In a pelagic environment, prey reduce their predation mortality by adopting a diel vertical migration (DVM) strategy, avoiding their predator during their peak performance by ...
