Dielectric barrier discharges: Pulsed breakdown, electrical characterization and Chemistry

2013 19th IEEE Pulsed Power Conference (PPC), 2013
The application of atmospheric pressure discharges in new fields like environmental protection, surface treatment or life-sciences requires a profound knowledge on the plasma parameters and properties. This includes the characterization of the breakdown processes triggering plasma chemistry, the proper determination of the electrical parameters and the

Correlation of axial and radial breakdown dynamics in dielectric barrier discharges

Plasma Sources Science and Technology, 2018
Experimental studies of single-filament dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) in a 0.1 vol% O2 in N2 gas mixture were performed with high spatial and temporal resolution. For the first time, the axial and radial dynamics and electrical characteristics of the DBDs were recorded by high-resolution imaging of the discharge emission combined with ...

Effects of the Dielectric Layer on a Planar and a Coplanar Discharge Breakdown

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1998
There are two influences of a dielectric layer on the breakdown in Paschen's law. The potential difference at the dielectric layer itself enhances the minimum value of firing voltage, while the strong field in the discharge space with a large dielectric constant reduces the firing voltage in a high pressure range.

The Deterioration and Breakdown of Solid Dielectrics by Internal Discharges at Cryogenic Temperatures

IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation, 1977
An investigation of internal discharge phenomena in artificial air-filled cavities in impregnated-paper, polyethylene, and polypropylene over a temperature range from 90 to 343 K is described. The technique used for the detection and measurement of internal discharges has a high resolution and sensitivity, and incorporates a multi-channel, pulse-height

The breakdown threshold of dielectric barrier discharges in piezoelectric polymer foams

2010 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectic Phenomena, 2010
The piezoelectric activity of charged cellular foams (so-called ferroelectrets) is compared against simulations based on a multi-layer electromechanical model and Townsend's model of Paschen breakdown, with the distribution of void heights determined from scanning electron micrographs.

The deterioration and breakdown of dielectrics resulting from internal discharges

Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1951
The deterioration of polythene and other dielectrics, when exposed to internal discharges, has been examined under controlled conditions. The discharge-inception voltage and the magnitude and energy of individual discharges have been determined, and the location and number of discharges in voids of different dimensions have been studied, by ...

Computer modeling of electrical breakdown in a pulsed dielectric barrier discharge in xenon

IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2002
Computer modeling of the plasma kinetics in a short-pulse excited dielectric barrier discharge in Xe has been used to simulate the spatial-temporal evolution of the homogeneous plasma during the electrical breakdown phase. The breakdown coincides with the development of a streamer-like ionization wavefront propagating toward the cathode at /spl sim/10 ...

Multilayer-Structured Discharge in Plasma Ionization Breakdown near a Dielectric Surface

2021 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS), 2021
Multipactor discharges are widely observed in rf accelerators, high power microwave transmission and space-based communication systems [1] - [2] . Understanding the fundamental physics of the transit multipactor and ionization breakdown is important.

The deterioration and breakdown of solid dielectrics by internal discharges at cryogenic temperatures

1976 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Insulation, 1976
An investigation into internal discharges in artificial air-filled cavities in impregnated-paper, polythene and polypropylene ueing a multi-channel, pulse-height analyser is described. On lowering the temperature of test samples from 343 K down to that of liquid nitrogen the discharge repetition rate and discharge magnitude under alternating-and direct-

Breakdown characteristics of atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge in gas flow condition

Physics of Plasmas, 2018
Experimental investigations of the breakdown characteristics of plate-to-plate dielectric barrier discharge excited by an AC source at different gas flow conditions are carried out. The ignition voltage for the appearance of the very first discharge filament and the breakdown voltage in each discharge half cycle in continuous operation are examined. As
