Ultrathin Li Metal Anodes: Quantitative Design Principles and Manufacturability Across Liquid and Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin lithium metal anodes (≤15 µm) offer a promising route to high‐energy‐density batteries due to their high capacity and low potential. This review presents design principles for ultrathin Li, evaluates fabrication strategies, and discusses challenges in liquid and solid‐state cells.

Conductive Additives for Next‐Generation Batteries: Emphasizing the Potential of Bio‐Derived 3D Carbon Architectures at Electrode–Electrolyte Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
3D conductive frameworks can maintain continuous electron transport, mechanical stability, and interfacial integrity, helping next‐generation batteries operate more efficiently. This Review examines their relevance to Si anodes, all‐solid‐state batteries, and dry‐processed electrodes, and highlights bio‐derived carbons as sustainable, structurally ...

Influence of Carbon Nanoparticles on Electrically Induced Wear of Grease‐Lubricated Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
When an electric current enters a pair of rubbing surfaces, enormous damage takes place. In this research, how such damage occurs in the presence of protective grease and the mitigation with added carbon nanoparticles, were investigated. It was discovered that those particles regulate transport and interfacial electrical stability of the grease ...

Characterization of Partial Discharges in Dielectric Oils Using High-Resolution CMOS Image Sensor and Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesSensors
In this work, an exhaustive analysis of the partial discharges that originate in the bubbles present in dielectric mineral oils is carried out. To achieve this, a low-cost, high-resolution CMOS image sensor is used.

First ground-based observations of sprites over southern Africa

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2018
Sprites are the optical signatures of electrical discharges in the mesosphere triggered by large lightning strikes associated with thunderstorms. Since their discovery in the late 1980s, sprites have been observed extensively around the world, although ...

On the Friction and Wear Mechanisms of Electrified Steel Contacts in CO2: Unveiling the Role of Carbon‐Rich Tribofilms Under Dry Sliding Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study investigates friction and wear of AISI 52100 steel under dry sliding in CO2, air, and N2 atmospheres, with and without contact electrification. CO2 forms a stable carbon‐rich tribofilm that reduces friction by ∼30% and wear by ∼85%. High‐resolution TEM, EELS, and molecular dynamics reveal pressure‐dependent lubrication mechanisms, showing ...

Experimental and numerical study on atmospheric‐pressure air dielectric barrier discharge via 50 Hz/5000 Hz dual‐frequency excitation

open access: yesHigh Voltage
A dual‐frequency (DF) dielectric barrier discharge, excited by the superposition of a 50 Hz low frequency (LF) and a 5000 Hz intermediate frequency (IF), is proposed to enhance discharge.
