Actuated Micro-optical Submount Using a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2011
Analysis of the operating characteristics of a dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) submount for the high-precision positioning of optical components in one dimension is presented. Precise alignment of a single-mode fiber is demonstrated and variation of the sensitivity of the submount motion by changing the bias voltage is confirmed.

Dielectric elastomers as next-generation polymeric actuators

Soft Matter, 2007
Due to their versatile properties, robust behavior, facile processability and low cost, organic polymers have become the material of choice for an increasing number of mature and cutting-edge technologies. In the last decade or so, a new class of polymers capable of responding to external electrical stimulation by displaying significant size or shape ...

Stress measurements of planar dielectric elastomer actuators

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2016
Dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) micro- and nano-structures are referred to artificial muscles because of their specific continuous power and adequate time response. The bending measurement of an asymmetric, planar DEA is described. The asymmetric cantilevers consist of 1 or 5 μm-thin DEAs deposited on polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates 16 ...

Modeling of Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

2019
Dielectric elastomer deforms in terms of area expansion under a voltage. The large and quick strain in dielectric elastomer features promising applications in soft robotics. This chapter introduces the characteristics of dielectric elastomer in physics as well as the performance of dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA).

Integrated sensing and actuation of dielectric elastomer actuator

SPIE Proceedings, 2017
Dielectric elastomer (DE) is a type of soft actuating material, the shape of which can be changed under electrical voltage stimuli. DE materials have great potential in applications involving energy harvesters, micro-manipulators, and adaptive optics. In this paper, a stripe DE actuator with integrated sensing and actuation is designed and fabricated ...

Actuation capability of a dielectric elastomer balloon actuator

2016 12th IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation (ICCA), 2016
Dielectric elastomers show great promise for soft actuators. As the allowable deformation range of dielectric elastomers is strictly limited by the material failures, the actuation ability of a dielectric elastomer actuator is accordingly bounded. Although the material failures have been well studied, little literature has been released regarding the ...

Modelling and Experimental Validation of Buckling Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

ASME 2011 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 2, 2011
Buckling dielectric elastomer actuators are special type of electro-mechanical transducers that exploit electro-elastic instability phenomena to generate large out-of-plane axial-symmetric deformations of circular membranes made of non-conductive rubbery material.

A Robust Multilayer Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

MRS Proceedings, 2015
ABSTRACTWe recently fabricated and characterized a new class of multilayer dielectric elastomer films comprising alternating layers of two different polymers, at least one of which is an elastomer. The films discussed here contain THV (a terpolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride)) and poly(ethylene octene) [EO] elastomer. The multilayer structure provides

Improved Materials for Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

Volume 1: Advanced Energy Systems; Advanced and Digital Manufacturing; Advanced Materials; Aerospace, 2008
Dielectric elastomers are an emerging class of electroactive polymers for electromechanical transduction. A broad application of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) is limited by the high voltage necessary to drive such devices. The development of novel elastomers offering better intrinsic electromechanical properties is one way to solve the problem ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators for tactile displays

World Haptics 2009 - Third Joint EuroHaptics conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems, 2009
In this paper we discuss dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) as one of the most promising technologies in electroactive polymers (EAP). For tactile display applications a large number of actuator elements is essential. The multilayer technology presented here offers the possibility to build up independent actuators and arrays at a high density within ...
