Compact Dielectric Elastomer Linear Actuators

Advanced Functional Materials, 2018
AbstractThe design and fabrication of a rolled dielectric elastomer actuator is described and the parametric dependence of the displacement and blocked force on the actuator geometry, elastomer layer thickness, voltage, and number of turns is analyzed. Combinations of different elastomers and carbon nanotube electrodes are investigated and optimized to

Soft dielectric elastomer actuator micropump

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2017
This paper presents a miniaturized soft dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) micropump which was demonstrated in microfluidic application. A strain-induced pre-stretched DEA undergoes expansion when subjected to high voltage, providing a two-way actuation in the presence of a pull-up spring.

Biomimetic Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

The First IEEE/RAS-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics, 2006. BioRob 2006., 2006
Polymer actuators offer attractive properties as biomimetic devices capable of mimicking functional characteristics of biological muscles and structures. This paper presents the ongoing research activities and the latest results achieved in our lab in the development of soft actuators made of a particular class of electroactive polymers, consisting of ...

Granularly Coupled Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2011
Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have been demonstrated to represent today a high-performance technology for electroactive polymer mechatronics. As a means to improve versatility and safety of DEAs, so-called “hydrostatically coupled” DEAs (HC-DEAs) have recently been shown to offer new opportunities.

Hydrostatically Coupled Dielectric Elastomer Actuators

IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2010
Within the emerging field of polymer-based mechatronics, soft materials showing intrinsic electromechanical transduction properties are being largely studied to develop new types of actuators. Among them, so-called dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators are one of the most promising.

Folded dielectric elastomer actuators

Smart Materials and Structures, 2007
Polymer-based linear actuators with contractile ability are currently demanded for several types of applications. Within the class of dielectric elastomer actuators, two basic configurations are available today for such a purpose: the multi-layer stack and the helical structure.

Helical dielectric elastomer actuators

Smart Materials and Structures, 2005
This paper presents a new type of contractile polymer-based electromechanical linear actuator. The device belongs to the class of dielectric elastomer actuators, which are typically capable of undergoing large deformations induced by an applied electric field.
