Partial discharges (PD) occur in solid insulating materials when the insulating material is partially bridged by an electrical discharge in response to an applied voltage stress. PDs typically occur at localized points of high field stresses or at voids and other inhomogeneities within the insulator.

A smart experimental technique for the optimization of dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) systems
Smart Materials and Structures, 2015In order to aid in moving dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) technology from the laboratory into a commercial product DEA prototypes should be tested against a variety of loading conditions and eventually in the end user conditions. An experimental test setup to seamlessly perform mechanical characterization and loading of the DEA would be a great ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators are considered as promising candidates for robotic elements. To this end, planar dielectric elastomer actuators (p-DEAs) and dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMES) are applicable. However, the knowledge of their electrical and mechanical characteristics is of major importance for engineering tasks ...

Dielectric elastomer (DE) transducers are a new technology offering many benefits for actuation and sensing devices. This work focuses on DE actuators (or DEAs) which have been shown to exhibit high-strain and high-speed characteristics. Diaphragm DEAs are a type of membrane DEA configured to operate out-of-plane. However, to produce reasonable stroke,

Finite element modeling for dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA)
2008A special sensor/actuator device based on dielectric elastomer (DEA) was studied and specialized to be used in applications for the space in the frame of the European Space Agency. The work illustrates the research project modeling procedure adopted to simulate the mechanical behavior of this material based on a finite element theory approach.
