Dielectric response in semiconductors

The dielectric matrix for a semiconductor is discussed in the long-wavelength limit as a function of energy. The off-diagonal elements are related to the properties of the Jones zone while the diagonal part corresponds to a simple interpolation formula and has the standard zero-energy long-wavelength limit.

Strained silicon: A dielectric-response calculation

Strain-induced birefringence is calculated with crystalline silicon for pressure applied along the [001] and [111] directions of the crystal. Results for the dielectric function and its change under hydrostatic strain are also given. The results are calculated for photon energies in the range 0--3.25 eV, i.e., below the direct band gap.

Effective dielectric response of nonlinear composites

A perturbative approach is developed to compute the local field for the case of a nonlinear inclusion embedded in a nonlinear host. The result is applied to nonlinear composites. General formulas for calculating the effective nonlinear susceptibility up to the case of fifth-order nonlinearity are given.

This article summarizes ongoing experimental efforts on nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy on plastic crystals. In plastic crystals, the relevant dipolar orientational degrees of freedom are fixed on a crystalline lattice with perfect translational symmetry.

The Dielectric and Conductivity Response of Sedimentary Rocks

ABSTRACT We calculate the complex dielectric constant of brine saturated sedimentary rocks using several different models. A calculation using a self-consistent scheme gives Archie’s law in the d.c. limit. The cementation exponent, m, is shown to depend on grain shape, in agreement with experiments.
