Sodium-Restricted Diet Increases Nighttime Plasma Norepinephrine and Impairs Sleep Patterns in Man*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1983
Plasma norepinephrine levels in 10 healthy young males were significantly elevated after 3 days of a low sodium (less than 500 mg/day) diet. The low sodium diet was also associated with disturbed sleep patterns: decreased rapid eye movement and slow wave sleep and increased wakefulness.

SODIUM RESTRICTION IN THE DIET FOR HYPERTENSION

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1945
In connection with studies of experimental hypertension the effects of various types of diet on the blood pressure have been studied, including alterations in the content of vitamins, proteins, minerals and certain other dietary constituents. In the course of these investigations it was noted that diets very low in sodium content appeared to exert a ...

Decrease of angiotensin sensitivity after bed rest and strongly sodium-restricted diet in pregnancy

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1983
Angiotensin II (A-II) sensitivity was determined in 23 nonmedicated nulliparas in the third trimester of pregnancy, before and after a 7- to 10-day period of bed rest and a strongly sodium-restricted diet (maximal 20 mmol Na+/24 hr). Seventeen nulliparous women had pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH).

Age-related differences in norepinephrine kinetics: effect of posture and sodium-restricted diet.

American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1990
We used compartmental analysis to study the influence of age on the kinetics of norepinephrine (NE) distribution and metabolism. Plasma NE and [3H]NE levels were measured in 10 young (age 19-33 yr) and 13 elderly (age 62-73 yr) subjects in the basal supine position, during upright posture, and after 1 wk of a sodium-restricted diet.

Sodium values of Chinese condiments and their use in sodium-restricted diets ,

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1983
Counseling a Chinese patient on a low-sodium diet can be an arduous task for the dietitian. Special consideration of cultural beliefs, food preferences, and food practices must be incorporated into the individualized instruction. Equally important is the need for familiarity with the sodium values of frequently consumed foods and condiments indigenous ...

Doxazosin versus nitrendipine: A double-blind comparative study in patients adhering to a sodium-restricted diet

Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, 1994
The aim of this double-blind parallel-group study was to compare the effects of doxazosin, a selective alpha 1-adrenoceptor antagonist with a long plasma half-life, with nitrendipine, a long-acting calcium-entry blocking drug. Following a 4-week placebo period, 26 patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension were randomly allocated to ...

The effect of a household partner and home urine monitoring on adherence to a sodium restricted diet

Social Science & Medicine, 1991
To evaluate the effects of social support and home urine monitoring on success with dietary sodium reduction, 114 essential hypertensive adults and a household partner were recruited. One of the pair was required to be the food preparer. Patients with their partners were randomly assigned to either an active or passive partner condition. During dietary
