A comparison of faecal analysis with backtracking to determine the diet composition and species preference of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis minor) [PDF]

open access: yes
The diet of black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis minor) was studied using backtracking and faecal analysis in South Africa. Both methods yielded different results, with a large bias for dominant species.

The Antioxidant Potential of the Mediterranean Diet in Patients at High Cardiovascular Risk: An In-Depth Review of the PREDIMED [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading global cause of death. Diet is known to be important in the prevention of CVD. The PREDIMED trial tested a relatively low-fat diet versus a high-fat Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) for the primary prevention of ...

Comparative Hypothalamic Proteomic Analysis Between Diet-Induced Obesity and Diet-Resistant Rats

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences
Obesity arises from a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Even among individuals with the same genetic predisposition, diet-induced obesity (DIO) exhibits varying degrees of susceptibility, which are categorized as DIO and diet-induced obesity resistance (DR).

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Dietary elimination of children with food protein induced gastrointestinal allergy – micronutrient adequacy with and without a hypoallergenic formula? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: The cornerstone for management of Food protein-induced gastrointestinal allergy (FPGIA) is dietary exclusion; however the micronutrient intake of this population has been poorly studied.

Quantitative proteomic analysis reveals different characteristics of bladder cancer cells after exposure to bisphenol A

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bisphenol A (BPA), a common chemical in plastics, exerts dual effects on bladder cancer cells: low doses promote growth and migration, while high doses suppress growth and migration. Multi‐omics and bioinformatics reveal BPA acts via MAPK and inflammatory pathways.

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

DNA metabarcoding reveals greater plant diversity than morphological seed analysis of bird feces

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences
Premise Fruit‐eating birds drive seed dispersal in recovering tropical ecosystems, shaping forest regeneration. Molecular techniques, such as DNA metabarcoding, enable diet analysis from feces and can provide complementary frugivory data where dispersal ...

Percent ash‐free dry weight as a robust method to estimate energy density across taxa

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Determining how energy flows through ecosystems reveals underlying ecological patterns that drive processes such as growth and food web dynamics. Models that assess the transfer of energy from producers to consumers require information on the energy ...

A real‐time PCR assay to detect predation by spiny dogfish on Atlantic cod in the western North Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Conventional observations show spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthius Linnaeus) rarely eat Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua Linnaeus; 0.02% of stomachs) in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean.
