Anticipatory contrast and diet selection by pigeons
Behavioural Processes, 1995The effect of future rate of reinforcement on choice and rate of responding was examined in three experiments in all of which pigeons performed on an operant simulation of diet selection followed by either a high or low rate of reinforcement. In Experiment 1 the duration of the prey selection task was 20 min.

Seven experiments with 324 chicks tested their ability to select a nutritionally adequate diet from separate sources of purified casein and various supplements, including gelatin (a source of two amino acids), a gelatin-creatine mixture (a source of three amino acids), and fiber (nonnutritive bulk).

Diet Selection as a Differential Foraging Game
SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2007An important issue addressed by behavioral ecology is that of the evolutionary relevance of foraging strategies adopted by animals in quest of a patchily distributed resource, both in terms of diet selection and patch-leaving decisions under competition.

Abstract In his classic work on the ecological energetics of freshwater fishes, Ivlev (1961) related feeding behaviour, through diet (prey) choice, to subsequent growth. At that time, a proximate, physiological emphasis was placed on the energy budget, and although this approach generated experimental direction and considerable ...

On the diet selection of sheep: sodium bicarbonate modifies the effect of urea on diet selection
Proceedings of the British Society of Animal Science, 2001It was hypothesised that both inadequate and abundant levels of effective rumen degradable protein (eRDP) would be avoided by ruminants given a choice of foods (Tolkamp et al, 1998). However, we have found that sheep do not appear to avoid the excess consumption of eRDP expected when they were offered a choice of foods that differed in eRDP content ...

Effect of phenylpropanolamine on diet selection in rats
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1988Four doses of phenylpropanolamine (PPA; i.e., dl-norephedrine: 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) and saline were injected intraperitoneally in female rats maintained on a dietary self-selection paradigm. Intake of all three macronutrients (carbohydrate, fat, and protein) was equally affected by high doses of PPA. Lower doses decreased fat and protein more than

Zinc and copper in self-selected diets
Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1979Levels of zinc and copper in the self-selected diets of twenty-two men and women were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Sixty-eight per cent of the subjects consumed less than two-thirds of the recommended allowance for zinc (15 mg). Eighty-one per cent consumed less than two-thirds of the suggested level of copper (2.0 mg).

Summary The results of these studies have shown (1) that a close relationshipexists between appetite and dietary needs; (2) that animals make beneficial selections from purified substances, even better than from natural foods; (3) that we have a new tool for the investigation of a variety of nutritional problems (up to the present the results have ...
