Bias-Corrected Root Mean Square Deviation Estimators

open access: yesFoundations
The root mean square deviation (RMSD) is a widely used item fit statistic in item response models. However, the sample RMSD is known to exhibit positive bias in small samples. To address this, seven alternative bias-corrected RMSD estimators are proposed

MIMIC Models for Uniform and Nonuniform DIF as Moderated Mediation Models. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this article, the authors describe how multiple indicators multiple cause (MIMIC) models for studying uniform and nonuniform differential item functioning (DIF) can be conceptualized as mediation and moderated mediation models.

Differential Item Functioning (DIF): What Functions Differentlyfor Immigrant Students in PISA 2009 Reading Items? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This analysis focuses on identifying items that present Differential Item Functioning (DIF) between native and immigrant students in the PISA 2009 reading assessment. The findings indicate that thirty-five percent of the 95 items or questions included in

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
